I do wonder if the contract he signed after the Newcastle move fell through might not have had a release if not promoted clause of some type and this is why Watford are letting him go? And why it was announced pretty much as soon as it was mathematically clear they weren't going to get promoted?

Maybe something like a release clause for the £25m that Newcastle had offered, that would trigger at the end of the season? So by swooping in at £30m, Watford are happy to wrap it up quickly before any other team swoops in with a lower offer they'd be forced to accept?

I'm just speculating, but it would seem a sensible request for a young player signing a new contract with a team just relegated. And a solid motivation to sell quickly from Watford. An a good bit of business from Brighton (sure, you pay a premium, but you wrap it up without having to compete with half a dozen other teams).
If he has a clause we won't be paying more than that, why would we? The player is free to choose between teams that meet the clause, it would be irrelevant if Watford accepted a bigger offer from us if the player knows that Liverpool for example would be in for him at the end if the season. The player has chosen Brighton which is a good thing 😀

Because if a deal is already signed before the clause goes into effect, then it's moot. That would be the point in doing it now.

Why would Pedro sign a deal with us if he knew he could get a better one when the clause was activated? Why would we pay more if we knew he would sign with us when the clause was activated?

He's signing with us because this is the best deal for him, and we'll pay what we need to pay Watford, no more.

ALBION AGREE JOAO PEDRO DEAL

We are delighted to announced that the club has agreed to sign forward Joao Pedro from Watford for undisclosed terms.

The 21-year-old Brazilian will officially join the club when the summer transfer window opens on a contract that runs until June 2028.

Technical director David Weir said, "Joao has been a long-term target of ours, and he has also attracted a lot of interest from across Europe.

"So, we are delighted to have reached an agreement with a key target for the club ahead of the summer window opening, and it is great for Joao that he can focus on the new season, with his immediate future settled.

"He's a brilliant young talent, technically very good, quick and with an eye for goal. He will complement our existing forward line very well. He also has settled well here, with good experience of both the Premier League and Championship and more than 100 games for Watford.

"We are really looking forward to starting work with him in pre-season, here in the UK and when we travel to the United States for the Premier League Summer Series."

Joao came through the youth ranks in his homeland with Fluminense, making his senior debut in March 2019. He would finish off the year with seven goals in 29 appearances for the Brazilian Serie A side, before making the move to then Premier League Watford at the beginning of 2020.

He made his debut for the Hornets in June 2020 against Southampton during Project Restart, and during three-and-a-half years with the Hornets has scored 24 goals in 109 appearances.

It would be the following season in the Championship that Joao made his breakthrough in English football, netting nine goals in the second tier as Watford finished second to make an immediate return to the top flight.

He fired in three Premier League goals that campaign, including one in a 4-1 victory over Manchester United. This season has been his most productive in front of goal, scoring 11 goals and assisting four times.

La Isla Bonita - Madonna

Last night I dreamt of Joao Pedro
Just like he's been here long, I knew the song
A young guy with eyes like the desert
My word the boy can play, De Zerbi's way.
Tropical the island breeze
He is playing wild and free
This is where we long to be
La futbol bonita

30mil for a player who only scored 3 goals in the prem and only 11 in 46 in the championship - boy thats a MASSIVE risk.. we signed Maupay from Brentford when he had scored 26 in the championship and look how that worked out....hmmmmmmmmmm

That's a lot of money, and the club have acted early. I assume they seem very certain about the player they're getting.
