[Football] Jimmy Greaves RIP

When I was a kid playing football in the playground everyone wanted to be Jimmy Greaves. He was quite rightly held in such high esteem. A wonderful career, bettered by none. His goal scoring for his clubs and England was off the scale. He had his demons but made a lot of people very happy. His legacy will live forever (sod the Premier League who think all stats start with them).
Enjoyed an evening at the Worthing Assembly rooms some years ago and got his book signed. He made time for everyone.
RIP Jimmy.

I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times at Brentwood as my brother was club doctor and he was a lovely, humble, amusing man. He retired too soon from top level football and regretted it. How much would he have been worth and paid in this era? I firmly believe he would have been as successful now even with the speed and fitness associated with the modern game.

I get so annoyed that Sky bleat on about Shearer, Wright and all those who played in the Prem as if football didn't exist before 1992, No conversation about top goalscorers should ever fail to mention Greavesy With his pace, technical skill, positioning and finishing ability, I would think 40 goals a season would be in his range playing for one of the top EPL teams.

A legend in life not just in football, because he proved there is a way back.

Reading his book, he was a hopeless alcoholic, his marriage had gone and he was skint.

With the support of AA, his then ex wife who he later remarried, his children, close friends and also Gary Newbon at Central Television, he picked himself up, was clean and sober for over 40 years and became a national treasure as well as a footballing legend and a role model to many people at rock bottom. I hope they make a movie one day.

Again a clear flaw in the honours system, Sir Phillip Green, basically a crook, but two legends in Bobby Moore and Greavsie yet no knighthoods?

Beautifully put Ian, a superstar from a different era, and he should've played in the World Cup Final. Saint and Greavsie showed what a knowledgeable, funny and above all, nice guy he was. My claim to fame with Jimmy Greaves? The ITV cameras were at The Goldstone (can't remember which game) and I had the privilege of having a piss next to him in the infamous East Terrace bogs. And before you all ask, no, I didn't look, but he was a lot shorter than I thought.
RIP Jimmy and thanks for the memories.

A true footballing legend. He played in the 62 World Cup, and in the group stages of the 66 World Cup but was injured. He was quite bitter about not playing in the final as he was fit again, but Hurst was his replacement, so the rest is history. He finally got a medal in 2009 when FIFA were persuaded that those who had played in the tournament should qualify.

A clever and amusing pundit too.

RIP Jimmy Greaves. My family loved you for your football skills and your humour when working on with Saint. I hope we have a minutes silence or applause today as respect for the legend.

Amazing it took till 2009 to get this sorted considering a third choice keeper has gotten one for years.

Apparently he sold it a few years later for £44k, but after a severe stroke in 2015 still had problems funding his care needs.

Really sad to hear of his passing of this legend, but not a bad age in the end considering he was pissed for most the 70s.

I would have him as one of the greatest English players of all time. It really is a joke that all footballing stats seem to start from 92.

What a character he was on Saint and Greavsie too. Loved his t-shirts.

Jimmy Greaves is the best English goalscorer that we have ever produced.
Just realized that i have never really seen much footage of his goals but know through my dad who watched Tottenham a lot that he was a goal machine and very quick off the mark the first few yards.
Also a thoroughly nice bloke as you could see in Saint & Greavsie.
Was also partial to a bit of Sporting Triangles.
One of my Tottenham mates met him at a book signing in Brighton and had a chat with him talking about Bobby Zamora at the time as Glen Hoddle who signed him had had his eye on him for a few years.
He can now sleep well after going through a few tough years I would imagine.
Without him we wouldn't have won the World Cup.

THE greatest. As has been mentioned he had a ready wit. During his playing career a referee made a dreadful decision. Jimmy walked up to him and said "Hey ref, if I called you a useless **** would you send me off?"
"Of course" replied the ref. "Foul and abusive language."
"What if I just thought it?" asked Jimmy,
"Well you can think whatever you like" said the ref"
Ok," said Jimmy, "In that case I think you're a useless ****!"
