I agree with what you're saying. I'm not sure why you got slated for your post. I agree as many of these young men/women heavily promote lifestyles of excess and a drive for supposed perfection that almost certainly cause some of the (often much younger) kids who follow them unnecessary stress and anxiety that theyre not perfect/living a similar life, etc. Social media amongst much of the youth now is awful. No escape from it to just relax and be themselves. It is worrying as schools are seeing huge rises in mental health issues, and imo these so-called celebrates really should share some of the blame. To me it's also a shame that we're now even seeing them thrown on to prime time reality TV shows like Strictly as it'll only make the drive to want to be one of these bloody YouTube celebs even greater.

It's a separate issue to her mental health issues and the moronic trolls who caused her to want to commit suicide, but it's all linked as I'm sure some of the trolls will be youngsters themselves who have mental health issues exacerbated through jealousy, etc.

Totally agree, I have had a few bully boys, throwing insults and name-calling and even wishing death on me, just because I have a different opinion to them on Brexit all over on the Brexit thread, I won't stoop to their depth of anger and hate, and they also won't stop me having an opinion, but they do all tend to hang around there and wait for their chance to jump in for the bundle, pathetic really.
But I suppose they were like that at school also, unless they were, of course, the school prefects!

It surprising how jealous people become when someone is perceived to be doing better than themselves, it's like he has a range rover lets key it, she's making a load of money as a successful singer let's go for her Achilles heel.

True, my experience so far is though, they have all been from the left.

I was thinking further afield beyond the unrepresentative microcosm of NSC.

There are plenty of right wing (and left wing) loons trolling, spitting hate.

There are vile people in the world and I can quite understand how upsetting for some of today's young (and not so young) and sensitive people it could be to be trolled.
People post nasty things on the internet that they wouldn't say to someone in a face to face discussion.
That goes for NSC too. There seems to be an increasingly nasty edge to some of the discussions on here, particularly on say, the Brexit thread. There is little or no tolerance of others with differing views and insults fly around from person to person, between bods who haven't even met and they come over as if they hate each other.
Very sad.

I have always said bully’s are cowards, before social media they had to pick their targets who they thought would not fight back or have a gang to hide behind. Now these cowards can just hide behind a keyboard.

As much as we all sympathise with people being trolled, all the time celebrities lord themselves right across the social spectrum of life there will always be some sad people that have nothing better to do than try to put them down.
Jealousy has always been a part of life and whether we have 1 or 100 platforms from which to display envy, it is something that will never go away.

We all have differing tastes in every way of what we do and do not like.

Hate to break it to you, but it's only going to get worse. Children are now being raised with mobile phones and social media from their early years. By the time they're teenagers, it's all they know and they're unlikely to change come adulthood. This is generation Z.

I just thank my lucky stars that I am of the age where I just missed out on growing up with it all. Don't have social media and get the impression I'm probably happier because of it.

On here we're all anonymous and couldn't give a shit about each other's lives really. It's "social media" without the social factor - a lot like the text based forums of the 90's, which predated social media as we know it.

If we all started posting selfies, pretentious quotes about our feelings, and pictures of our lunch, then I'd agree with the point you're making.

I wouldn't say we're all anonymous. I've met many an Nsc'er at games, REMF, and in the old days at marches, demonstrations etc.

I don't do social media on the whole apart from NSC so I'm neither defending nor criticising it, but for all those saying if Jesy or others in a similar position don't like the criticism or nasty comments all she has to do is stay off social media, it's a bit like saying if you don't like being taunted when you walk down the street all you have to do is don't leave the house or if you don't like being bullied at work all you have to do is don't go to work.

Like it or loathe it social media isn't going to go away and as much as it is alien to me it is now a large part of younger peoples' way of socialising and communicating. To suggest she stays off social media is like suggesting she isolates herself and withdraws from society, or more particularly her peer group. That would have as much a negative effect on her mental health as the negative aspects of using social media.

To put it in an NSC context do you think you should leave the forum if you were constantly subjected to nasty, bullying comments from a small minority of people? If you have been subjected to such comments how did it make you feel? At least you were able to maintain your anonymity and any bullying is directed at your anonymous persona not you directly and personally so you didn't feel publicly ridiculed. But those comments probably still had an affect on you even if it was just anger. So imagine all those negative comments are being made to you on a large scale, on a high profile public forum and where you didn't enjoy the priviledge of anonymity. How exposed and vulnerable would you feel? How humiliated? In those circumstances should you just leave NSC? Should you isolate yourself from the Albion community? Should you maybe even just stop going to matches because everyone will know who you are so you could be more easily targeted. Why should you because of a few nasty individuals? So why should Jesy cut herself off from something which is a large part of her life?

Also as far as the cosmetic surgery she seems to have undergone, as much as I find it shocking in a girl/woman of her relatively young age her decision to have it done was probably a reaction to all the negative comments about her appearance she has had to endure. What she has gone through is actually more traumatic than a lot of people seem to realise and the solutions some people are offering are really missing the point.

Very good summary. Whilst suggesting she avoids social media entirely is perhaps unrealistic, as many have already stated the reality is that she just needs to adjust her mind set to ignore negative comments. One can imagine she accesses social media to get validation so the old adage of " don't buy the ticket if you can't handle the ride " applies.

People with untraceable and fake social media accounts should be restricted from posting on legitimate accounts within the popular top social networks. It wouldn't be hard to make them two tiered systems with a small cost of cross referencing bank accounts, and anyone under 17 can only use sub accounts of traceable parents or adult guardians.
