I've always found the idea of a Tory capitalist 'leader' quite strange, your average CxO will earn 5 to 10 times a year more than your average MP, so if they're that into capitalism then surely they'd rather actually be the CxO? They're not because they're a bit shit. So being a F500 CxO's puppet is the next best thing......

I can't believe people are saying it's a slip of the toungue, it's his wife FFS, in any situation you know where she is from.
My wife is from Sri Lanka, I have never mistakenly said or even thought that she is from India or Pakistan.
If you wife is English have you ever said she is Scotch or Welsh.

Can not stand the man but was really confused as to how he could make this weird mistake. Saw today that according to him, he'd just finished speaking to his Chinese counterpart in Japanese when he said it. He's fluent in Japanese apparently after living there so I can kind of see now where it came from.

When the British FOREIGN Secretary cannot get his wifes nationality right in a meeting with Chinese officials, considering the two countries histories? Dear Lord. Yes, I think that because someone made a slip of the tongue – or had momentary brain fade – for whatever reason, that fact ALONE doesn't mean they are not 'up to the job' of Foreign Secretary. There may be other reasons why you might think he isn't. Mistakenly saying his wife is Japanese, not Chinese, isn't one of them.

I'll say again – I'm not his biggest fan, but I realise when someone has made a genuine mistake. The fallout from it is pretty embarrassing.

The post of Foreign Secretary is the third highest in the country behind the Chancellor and Prime Minister.

It was his own wife, and he was in the prescence of Chinese officials where a trade deal is going to be so important from next year. Schoolboy error comes to mind.

He's in charge of our foreign policy. The kind of diplomacy that makes or breaks trade deals, can create or defuse international tensions or can even lead to conflict. Do you want someone who in an important conference meeting is capable of getting the nationality of his wife mixed up!?

Basically, if you're the type of person where this is an easy mistake to make, you shouldn't be in a top job. CEOs, leaders etc. get the top jobs because they don't generally make stupid mistakes. Although one thing going for Hunt is that many of these foreign diplomats have met our previous Foreign Secretary so may actually still see him as a step up.

Nail, head. I’d call for his sacking but I dread to think who’s next in line if Boris and Hunt were seen as the best people for the job. Maybe the government can retire this position to save further embarrassment?

Ho- hum; yes, a very embarrassing mistake by Mr. Hunt, but still give me this rather than the combined intellect of Corbyn, McDonnell , Abbott etc. running the country.
As an aside, it is nice to see, in the Times today, that McDonnell is leading a shadow cabinet revolt over Corbyn's handling of the anti-semitism scandal engulfing the Labour party.
Additionally, methinks that there is a good old protest fomenting among moderate and sensible Labour MP's against the direction of the party under the present leadership.Long may it continue, so that for the good of the country, the Labour party will cease to be run by extremists, and once again become a party of decency, whilst either in Opposition or Government.

People, of the left and right, are allowing the media to set the agenda. For anyone here praying for a Corbyn government, the very same media people (way wider the Mail and Telegraph) will set out to pick about that government apart too.

The vast majority of national level polticians are honourable people doing their best for their constituents and nation, and being human, are imperfect.

Allow Kuennsberg & co to drive your view of the world, can only give a distorted view far removed from reality.

Spot on. Where I work (uni) we have 'business' people charged with commercialising our research. They are earning a fifth of what they could earn in actual industry. And they are utter shite. Every few years the college sacks them all, closes the 'department' and then creates a similar set up with a new name: 'X Business' to 'X enterprises' to 'X innovations'. All they do is take credit for our (my) discoveries, then **** up the commercialisation by taking so long over the paperwork the external investor gives up. I have someone wanting to invest half a million on a project, and he can't because my institute cannot or will not deal with the IP and ownership paperwork. It is half a day's work and all the documents are 'fill in the blank spaces'. The equivalent dick heads are now trying to roll out Brexit. Government should let business do what it wants, setting only the tax tariffs and making employer protection laws. Anyway I suspect I have gone off on a tangent here. As for Hunt, see what happens if you call your missus by the name of your ex by mistake. A slip of the tongue that may cost you your 'job'.

Totally agree.

Some pomposity from paragons of virtue in this thread, that people in these positions should never be allowed to make a slip of the tongue mistake. Hidden agenda against a party that hate = always the real underlying reason.

Let's allow Ministers, and MP's from all parties, to get on with their hard work, and judge their policies and effectiveness objectively.

(I'm not an Tory diehard before you jump to that conclusion. I've voted for many parties, after rationally weighing up issues. For example, I voted for Blair in 97, C.Lucas, voted Remain, despise fox hunting and loathe Trump).
