Much like £3 million for CMS...

Hopefully Gus has learned from that. CMS is still capable of being an excellent player for us - but I still get the feeling Gus got carried away with the fact he COULD get his man (in the face of stern competition)... in that way that everybody wanting him MADE him more desirable! Classic psychology. Like a kid with money burning a hole in his pocket...

As I say - still a great player but was he too expensive? Time will tell.

Back on topic - looking forward to seeing how much this inflates the myopic armchair valuations from the divvies up the road for their lord and saviour, wilfried 'lettuce ankles' zaha

Would admit that 3 million was too much, should of been closer to 1.5 or 2. But £7 million is alot if he flops.
Personally think he is a very good player and will be good to watch him in the premiership. Young english strikers are always valued highly for some reason.

EDIT:- How much do you think Jordan Rhodes would sell for? Similar position to CMS probably sell for a similar price.

Difference for me is that Rhodes and Rodriguez have a far bigger resale value as they're still very young, CMS is 28 soon (I think) and once his 4 year contract is up, he'll be past his best you'd have thought.

7 million is a big gamble though but so are all striker signings when you've just reached the Prem.

You do realise the board would do negotiations right. Gus just says who he wants, and prioritises them.

I doubt they'll be selling Sharp, you need more than two/three strikers.

Of course I'd love him if they do want to, he is the world's best amputee footballer now.

Those of you laughing, value and price are two different things. Obviously we value Jay Rod at that price.

Why would Billy Sharp leave the Champions of League 1 from last season to drop down to us :lolol:

Done deal - £7m.

I'm not one of these Saints bashers but that figure sounds a lot for an unproven striker ?!

A good bit of business for all concerned. I'm happy with it.

£7m maybe pricey, we'll see, but if he works out in the Prem (and I reckon he will) then at only 22 years with a 4 year contract his sell-on value won't drop below that much. We all know there is a sizeable step up from Championship prices to Prem. The chairman always said the purse strings would be opened once we got back to the Prem and this shows good intent. And don't forget that only £3 million was spent already from the £12 million we got for Oxlade Chamberlain.

Oh, and dream on about getting your beaks on our Billy Sharp. He ain't going nowhere. We now have two large-solid players (Sharp, Lambo) and two quicker more agile (Jay Rod and Lee). Good combination.

Why would southampton (top at the time) sign billy sharp, only to sell him a few months later when they are in the premier league? Were doncaster that much of a threat to them that southampton needed to weaken them?

I think any further signings from saints will show whether this is smart business or not (before we see him play, of course). I mean, I don't believe such a big deal would have been made over the 35m for Andy Carroll had Liverpool only spent 2-5m on Downing and Henderson. It would have been a gamble that didn't pay off in the first season, but since they spent 16m on henderson, 20m on downing, 7m on Adam it became clear thy were overspending.

If saints make a habit of spending what appears to be too much, then people should question their fiscal decisions.

I've only seen Billy Sharp a few times. Moaning his arse off at Withdean is the most recognisabe one for me. I wouldn't ever describe him as being 'large-solid'.
