This season, we are scoring 2.3 goals per game and conceding 1.9 goals per game. 0 clean sheets. We are 7th in the league with 17 points.

Crystal Palace (ew) are scoring 0.8 goals per game and conceding 1.3 goals per game. 4 clean sheets. They are 13th in the league with 12 points.

Obviously clean sheets are good but it is not really a stat that is indicative of the goalkeeper. The more expansive and attacking you are, the more likely you will score but at the same time, more likely to conceded.
I’m not arguing about the style of play but come on he is not a great shot stopper.

That’s simply not true. Man City and Arsenal are arguably the two most expansive teams in the league yet they concede the fewest shots. We’re about mid table for shots conceded, yet our goalkeepers are in the bottom 3 for shots conceded. We’re also one of only 4 clubs not to keep a clean sheet, the other 3 being the teams most likely to get relegated.

Don’t get me wrong, the style of play doesn’t always help Steele, and the loss of Caicedo has been huge, but the facts are that he doesn’t do the goalkeeping stuff well. His save % is low, he claims almost nothing (statistically speaking), he barely sweeps up behind the defence (statistically speaking) and we’re conceding a lot of goals relative to the shots against us.

People can deny the stats all they want and what’s right in front of their eyes, and I’m all for supporting our players 100% on match days, but they aren’t beyond criticism just because they’re nice blokes and their passing ability suits the way the manager wants to attack.

The reason I compared us to Palace is because they are similar-ish to us in terms of budget etc.

Obviously, if we had a squad worth a Billion, I would expect our metrics to be similar.

I've banged the drum for Jason 'Lee' Steele before – while some 'fans' seemingly get off on having a pop at him – but the latest official Albion podcast is well worth a listen. You can almost feel the emotion coming through when he talks about what it means for him to be where he is. The work that he has put in to get there is phenomenal, too. Comes across as an extremely humble guy who has to pinch himself to realise he's living his dream.

Steele might not be the long-term solution, but I don't think anyone can deny he's exceeded the expectations of most people from when he signed and the level of improvement (and increased confidence) is there for all to see. Top bloke and a great keeper, IMO...

I don’t get the dislike from some people. Much prefer him in goal than Bart (he’ll get his time).

They’ll always be a player people moan about. Mine was Dahoud but he’s done now but some people will like him. It’s a funny old game saint

His range of passing on Monday night, particularly in the first half, was astounding.

I really like both our keepers, really doesn't bother me who's name is on the team sheet. That position is the least of our worries (not that we have many worries)
