I haven’t done it for many years, but round the world tickets could be good value at one point

The JAL Tokyo to London flight used to stop over in Alaska for refuelling, so that may be an option depending on time of year

Having lived and worked for several years in Redwood Shores near San Francisco, I would recommend San Fran as a place to visit and use as a base for touring

Why don't you want to do Japan in one flight? Is it the length? It's about 12 hours London to Tokyo. 14 or so from Tokyo to london though(thanks to Russia....)

I don't know what London to San Fransisco is but it's about 9 or so hours from there to Tokyo. If you want to break the flight up it might be better going via somewhere like China or the middle east. I went back to Tokyo via China last summer and it was about 9 or 10 hours to China and then about 3.5 hours from Beijing to Tokyo.

I've not gone through Dubai or Abu Dhabi but that seems to be quite a popular one stop route.
Was just about to post the same thing. It doesn’t make sense time wise to fly to Tokyo via San Francisco, unless you can get a cheap round the world ticket that stops say at New York, then San Fran then Tokyo. If I was going to San Francisco, I’d make a separate trip of it and do a fly drive. Fly into SF and drive to Lake Taho, Yosemite, Death Valley, Las Vegas and then fly out of LA.
