How ironic that we go to Japan and bag 5 goals yet none are scored by Mitoma.

Nick Stanley leaves for Norwich and we score a goal from a set piece. Draw your own conclusions.

That was excellent. I thought Barco and Sarmiento were the pick of the Brighton players but it was a great performance all round ( I liked the look of Moran, Minteh and ACD too). I know the opposition wasn't up to much but you still have to score the goals.

I wasn't going to go to any friendlies but I think I'll have to take in Villarreal now.

Barco can definitely put in a decent corner. We were missing those deliveries last year.

A great 1st run out and something for us fans to get excited about. Given the mixture of youth and new players being introduced, it was more than i expected.
As others have mentioned, its going to be very difficult to pick a match day squad in not so long from now. Some good players are either going to be sold or sent out on a loan.
It was certainly evident that FH likes to attack but on the other side of that coin is a defence that looked to be playing a very, very high line at times. We got away with it today on multiple occasions but quicker, more savvy Premier League forwards will not be so forgiving. This will of course be tweaked in the coming weeks as other players return and FH assesses his squad.
Couldnt ask for more today though. UTA

Best player on the pitch 2nd half. Class act this lad. I can see him being very hard to dislodge for the left wingback berth, even when Estupinan is back to full fitnesss
Possible to have them both on the pitch if Estupinan plays the left cb in a 3. Similar to what Cucurella did for us. Gives us more pace at the back and someone to run through the middle of the pitch when there's space.

Opposition was absolutely gash. Taking away nothing from the boys I thought they played with good energy. My only concern is the ball over the top in the channels. Welcomed vulnerable. I think the trip to QPR will be a better test instead of these Jap teams.

The talent we have the the depth is incredible. All this without at least 6 senior players involved. God knows how much our wage bill is now.

Very important not to get carried away by friendlies. However, a few observations;

The style is clearly going to continue to be fluid and based on a passing game. Suspect we'll concede a few goals this season if he's going with a flexible, attacking back three, but it should be a good watch no matter what.

The depth of the squad now, thinking about the players that didn't travel and the players that weren't involved, is incredible if everyone's fit.

So much young talent in the team, based on very early evidence. Geordies I spoke to on holiday really didn't want to lose Minteh, and the lad from Arsenal looks hugely promising too.

I sincerely hope we don't sell Gross and Gilmour. Well, I hope we don't sell either of them, but if they both go, to me we're repeating what happened last year, when we lost the heart of our midfield and arguably our two best players. if they go, younger, less experienced players and newer players will have to do the jobs they've done outstandingly well. Fingers crossed.

Barco... oh yes. From the little we've seen of him, Pervis will have real trouble keeping him out of the side.

Absolutely no clue how this season's going to go, but one thing I'd put my house on is that it ain't going to be boring watching us.

Agree. Barco was on the cusp of contributing to the Goals For tally at the tail end of last season. Two completely different players. How do you accommodate them both? Might be the proverbial nice problem to have, but a full-on quandary IRL nonetheless

*edit* IMHO Barco edges it for me on account of scope for kicking on and developing into something really special

Who needs a clean sheet 😂
The gaffer, apparently:
I don’t think everything was perfect - how we played and how we defended. ... [T]he goal in the end makes me a little bit, not angry, but a little bit disappointed because I think a clean sheet every time is good, especially for Jason [Steele], but there's still things to improve and we will continue tomorrow.

Agreed - if the Dutch midfielder is any good, top 10 is a realistic target again, I'm not going to get carried away and say Europe as I think the harsh lessons of the Prem will be a learning curve for our new coach

A matter of opinion of course. However, I love it!

It's one of those that don't look amazing in pics and on TVs but I saw it in the Churchill Square shop last week in the flesh so to speak and it looked amazing. I'd buy it if I had space in my wardrobe from all the times I've buckled in the past

In terms of the Barco Estupinan comments, I agree with those saying both could be incorporated.

In fact

I could see a situation where our left side comprises Estupinan as a LCB, Barco LWB and Mitoma as the left sided player in a front 3. We could carry a sensational threat down that side.

I also agree with those saying Barco has to edge Estupinan for a spot if they were both fit and only one spot was available. I'm not saying Pervis isn't a terrific player, but Barco, just wow. He's going right to the top

The detailing on the fabric does make it look a little bit like it's made of kitchen roll though...

Sean Dyche you mean. We never beat his anti-football sides. From memory, is it just the 1 win against Burnely at the start of a season couple of years ago...?

I don't even want to know what Hurzeler's teams' record against sides that park the bus looks like.

I just want to BELIEVE that it's great and that we'll SMASH Everton and make the northern dalek cry into his hotpot.

I would love, it LOVE IT.
