And its a system that richly rewards total mediocrity.
In my opinion, Liverpool would have won a Premiership by now were it not for the fact that you can "settle" for 4th and keep the good times rolling. They are no longer a club that strives to be the best - why bother, when 2nd, 3rd or 4th will do ?

What Albion fan wouldn't like to see us achieve the same level of mediocrity as Liverpool? Shit-we can't even get 6th position at the arse end of football in the third tier of English football. THAT is true mediocrity.

So what if they qualified for the Champions League by finishing 4th? That is how the competition is set up FFS-what should they do? tell UEFA they don't want to play until they finish 1st?

Their mediocrity has only bought them 3 Champions League semi-finals in 4 years, 2 finals and their 5th European Championship. Mediocrity indeed.

Some of you people need a reality check sometimes. Do you seriously believe that Liverpool Football Club (the club and fans) are happy not winning the Premiershite whilst watching ManUre, The Arse and Chelski dominate?

I'm not trying to compare the Albion to the GRANDEUR that is Liverpool FC. Far from it. I fully accept our mediocrity in the great scheme of things.

But your last paragraph is the most relevent. The FANS of Liverpool obviously arn't happy at seeing three other clubs disappear into the distance year after year with half a season left to play, far from it. But the reason its gradually become acceptable is because there is always the safety net of 4th place to stay on the Chamopions League gravy train. As long as THATS the case, then the mediocrity of 4th is far easier for a club of Liverpools stature to accept.

Lets face it, they're hardly going to bridge the gap while they're still playing the likes of Voronin and keeping a straight face about it.

But it's not gradually becoming acceptable to finish 4th. Liverpool would LOVE to win the Premiership because they haven't done so before. I reckon most of their fans would choose the Premiership over European success at the moment. And Chelsea are more bothered about the Champs League for the same reason.

Lets face it, they're hardly going to bridge the gap while they're still playing the likes of Voronin and keeping a straight face about it.
Yet Arsenal still find room for Phillipe Senderos, and even Man Utd have had some clowns play for them in recent years - Taibi, for example. Every team has its weak link. Meanwhile, for every Voronin there are 2 or 3 of the class of Torres and Gerrard.

I just loved what happened at Anfield last night, purely to give a perfect example of Wenger hypocrisy.

At various times last night he said:

1. The challenge by Kuyt at The Emirates last week was a definite penalty
2. The challenge by Toure tonight was definitely not a penalty
3. The challenge by Kuyt last week was exactly the same as the one by Toure tonight.

Now hang on a cotten picking moment here Arsene. If last nights was NOT a penalty, yet you say the challenge last week was exactly the same, how the f*** do you work out that last week it SHOULD have been a penalty ? Did the rules change midweek or something?

But that just my point.
In years gone by, there was no "consolation" of 4th place. 4th was absolutely nowhere. These days, although 4th is always described as "disappointing", but as long as Liverpool qualify for the Champions League, it HAS become acceptable. Its the absolute minumum achievement that club now looks for, and thats primarily for financial reasons.

The be-all and end-all used to be finishing top of the pile. Thats what clubs like Liverpool always strived for, and very often achieved - because anything less was unacceptable. Nowadays, you basically get the same rewards (give or take a qualifying round) for finishing 4th as you do 1st. So of course as a club Liverpool would love to win the Prem, but whilst the club would never admit to it, they're still "ok" with finishing top 4.

Take away the safety net, and clubs like Liverpool would have done EVERYTHING to finish top. They don't have to though, so they don't strive QUITE as hard as they would have done had 4th meant nothing.

Thats my opinion, and I'm STICKING to it.

As far as I am concerned the Champions league should be just that, a competition between teams who have finished as Champions of their respective national leagues, just like it used to be. There should be no transfer to the UEFA Cup for teams who have failed to qualify for the latter stages of the Champions League, you have lost and that is where it should end, we don't have the same system between the FA and League Cups...why should Europe be any different. While we are at it, let's go back to having a Cup Winners Cup, that was always a pretty entertaining competition...in fact, let's try and re-invent the wheel while we are at it.

My biggest issue with the Champions League is what it has done to the UEFA Cup. i.e. turned it into a nothing plate competition, of little interest to anyone until the semis are played.

The financial incentives of playing in the champs league is also a big problem, but that is of the clubs own making. They need to be redistributing the wealth in the game a bit more sensibly. This might also give the FA Cup a bit of its old kudos back.

What exactly is there to hate?

At least they've got some English players in the team unlike arsenal who usually make every effort to startwith 11 bloody foreigners.

Probably stems from growing up in the late70s early 80s when everyone seemed to support them.A bit like Man u today i suppose.
