The marketing department needs a large kick up the arse as they are not up fir it IMHO but I suppose the cariman etc pay their wages so they must feel they are doing OK.

Can't wait for the innivotive Falmer pricing to kick in...........

What's the catchment zone for Brighton. Huge. Yet we still struggle to get decent crowds.

I think all of his suggestions should tried. The idea about 'bring your grandchild' promotion at the supermarkets - great idea.

Not sure about his ideas, but it does annoy me a tad that there's f*** ALL advertising in Mid Sussex.

Good to have ideas, but as someone who did employ promo girls for 5 years, his maths are flawed.

Promo dollies wont work for 2 hours here, and two hours there - they need £80 a day before tax minimum.
Stations and trains are closely monitored and you have to pay lots to be on them too. They also need shaperoning (sp?) for their own safety, can't just be hanging around; where to store the leaflets - not in their own cars, need business insurance..
Who monitors the results, and how; branded uniforms cost money too
The bookers have to pay the NI, the bookers need Employers and Public Liability Ins, you need to brief all staff, in a venue with full H&S notes.
It goes on and on...

And it can't look shit, just lobbed together, would be a PR disaster..

Plus getting someone else to sponsor them (surprised he mentioned Harvey's - they do support the Albion, but don't actually lob in any cash) is another matter entirely.

And I don't think it would work for just one day.

One of the problems is understanding the best media through which to reach people. WW says about reaching people in Mid Sussex. What are the daily local papers there? Are they cost-effective to advertise in there? Same for Worthing, Lewes, Eastbourne, Hastings. Crawley, Crowborough, Tunbridge Wells, etc.

To be honest, on the pitiful shoestring budget Paul Rogers has to work with, it sometimes has to be the case of trying to get as much free press as possible.

And, no, I don't know what the answer would be, but I do feel, as imaginative as Jamie's idea is, as Rowdey says, it is a tad over-simplified cost-wise.

When I was lad, back in the dark ages, on every station in West Sussex there was a board/poster advertising the current months home games plus usually the first of the next month. This was changed towards the end of the month to be replaced by the next months etc, with prices kick off etc even the reserve games at The Goldstone were advertised. Havent seen them for years is this down to advertising costs on stations or lack of initiative by the club.

f*** all would be an understatement!

If you came to Mid Sussex for a visit, you would have no idea there's a football club in the 3rd tier of English football just 15 odd miles away.

Actually, I saw those posters in the Club Shop on Saturday.

But only in the Club Shop. :(

With spare capacity in the ground, it's surely possible to get a few tickets bundled up to be sent out to local retailers around the catchment area on a sale or return basis? With a few posters ("Buy your tickets for Albion's match on Saturday HERE"), it would enable a good few fans to be caught when shopping locally, without them having to go through all the hassle of going into (or contacting) the ticket office in Queens Road.

Could they not leave some with The Argus shops around the county but then they are closing bit by bit. Or dare I say it Forfars Bakers, whose owner is a staunch supporter, although himm and his wife were anti Falmer. There is a Forfars in a number of the large towns of Sussex surrounding Brighton.

I agree the marketing department at the club does appears to be lacking in ideas or initiatives.

I raised the point of existing fund raising activities (seagull scratch cards)that bring good regular income to the the club all year, not just during the season.

Good supporters of the club sell these knocking on doors every week rain or shine collecting for the club.

I’m sure there are many supporters that don’t even know of their existence.

I asked why is this fund raiser was not mentioned and promoted in the match day programme as it would be free advertising?
Also that they could be sold at the ground on match days to increase income for the club??.

These were direct straight forward questions.

as in "why is this fund raiser was not mentioned and promoted in the match day programme"

what did i get back from insider...."Good suggestion, will pass this on"

It wasn't a suggestion , it was a question which has never been answered.

I can't believe this opportunity has been passed by season after season.

Just as a side note anyone on here not know that the club sells scratch cards door to door every week ?

The club used to pay canvassers to canvas door to door looking for new customers, but still not advertise in the programme for free, i find this unbelievable.

If you came to BRIGHTON for a visit you could very possibly have the same idea.

His comment about £5000 outlay not gaining 500 tickets is a valid point. What sells the club is our performance on the field of play and position in the league so from that point of view MAs recent comment has not done their PR any good.

To a degree you are correct but I have felt for a long time that the club doesnt do anything imaginative on the promotions front. A few cheesy Dick Knight puns in the Argus is as far as it goes. If you dont look at the back page of the Argus you probably will never ever see any new initiative.

As for the promo-girls thing I know some people who have done 'event management' which is a fancy title for basically dressing up as a crisp and handing out promos and samples etc in Churchill Square....it is quite easy to organise and I'm certain it doesnt cost anywhere near 5k to set up.

There are loads of different events on in Brighton as well, a bit of visibility at these would be welcome. I was at the food and drink festival the other week........a tongue-in-cheek stall at that selling pies and Bovril would have got a lot of coverage.

Unfortunately the clubs ideas of publicity and promotions is to give away some free seats to schools or local youth football teams. When I had my pubs I always thought that a promotion was designed to give the customer something but in turn increase the money that I took in the tills, perhaps I was wrong.
