With spare capacity in the ground, it's surely possible to get a few tickets bundled up to be sent out to local retailers around the catchment area on a sale or return basis? With a few posters ("Buy your tickets for Albion's match on Saturday HERE"), it would enable a good few fans to be caught when shopping locally, without them having to go through all the hassle of going into (or contacting) the ticket office in Queens Road.

Funny you should say that. I just found out this morning that you can buy a ticket from Newhaven Taxi office, no booking fee either.

Thanks

Just a thanks for the poll. I was amazed and I suppose a bit flattered ! I have not voted.

Just to say that its easy to knock the club, and I'm not doing that. I think however the club has a way to go on the marketing front and really, it always has failed in that department. I have posted a reply and the ball is down the clubs end.

Perhaps marketing is something for Harty to ask the club about also

All the best

Full marks for your suggestions and your objective approach.

I think is difficult to say that the club has failed until we know what ideas have been tried or rejected and what the budget is - most crucially the latter.

I know from personal experience that marketing is one of the most difficult things to get right. One can have loads of ideas but very few wll be successful. And sometimes ideas that you might be 99% sure will work are simply too expensive. You'll bring in extra business but not enough to repay the marketing costs.

All marketing that costs money is a huge financial gamble.

Do you think that the club has an insufficient budget or less than effective marketing people? Or both!

I don't understand the point from insider. Whilst the initial outlay of say £5,000 may not be recouped immediatly, it may well in the future. After all, each and every one of us here had a first Albion game at some point and I daresay we have put in much more than £5,000 each over the years.

I see that there is now a post in 'ask the club' about students;

Wolves did a good promotion for students at the University of Wolverhampton. Basically they gave 5,000 vouchers which the Students' Union circulated (in return for circulating the vouchers, the SU go 8 free match tickets to give to the winning team of a 6-a-side charity tournament). These vouchers entitled students to a match ticket for a tenner (one aganst a side that Wolves knew they would beat). A few days after the match, every student that attended then got an e-mail from Wolves saying 'wasn't it a good match' etc, containing a voucher that would get them a replica home shirt for £20.

This approach worked really well, because Molineux is in the middle of the University of Wolverhampton's main campus. The voucher for a replica shirt and the fact that the students were then on wolves' marketing database encouraged return attendance. I imagine it would work excellently once we are at Falmer (also next to a Uni campus).

That's the point - 'initial' outlay. So to be effective, this sort of thing has to be done on a regular basis. The costs would soon increase.

I fear that - especially after Rowdey's very pertinent points - £5,000 will not cover Jamie's idea, especially across 15 railway stations. He believes it can, and fair play to him, and it would be interesting to see it in action.

The clubs worst PR was leaving the ticket price the same for Adults at the start of the season thus making many unable to afford one in the 1st place.....

I have to say I'm not convinced that marketing is really going to have that much of an effect. The best marketing is the team playing well and challenging. £24.50 is a hell of a lot of money and I just don't see a huge amount of casuals being interested. We usually sell loads more when the seats are cheaper, it's just that people aren't willing to pay so much whether they have some dolled up slapper handing them a leaflet or not.

Hi

Just a couple of points:-

- Yes a good team / product sells. But the albion will never be Man U and even the best team in our history should still have an effective marketing team behind them. There is a reason why YSL, and other major brands invest heavily in their marketing, brand and selling.

- Insider doubts that marketing can sell 500 tickets. This is a worry if this is a genuine view. The population of Sussex according to the 2001 census was approaching 1.5 Million. 8,000 tickets should be a given, with a proper marketing function.

- The Seagirls idea is in its early stages. Details will have to be ironed out so dont old me to figures! It is a concept tat should be deliverable at a good price with a good return.

- The Albion appointed a footballer in its maketing department. Thats fine and sure he is good, but if a maketing man had been appointed as the manager then the outcry would have been huge. (personally tho' I dont think you need to be a marketing man to do marketing or a football player o be a manage-see Fergusson, Wenger ect). However the point I make is that marketing must be done professionally, wit reference to the marketing mix and the rewards will follow.

Up the albion

You're keen, i give you that..Just passed your MA or something.. :D

Just thinking ahead here, if i was on a train, and a Seagirl approached me, offering tickets for game x, how would i pay her ?
By card ? then she needs a remote authorising PDQ type machine, and so does her mate.
By cash ?
That could get very interesting with dollies holding £100's of pounds, and needing change of course...

And they need another 'Seat booking machine' to allocate seats..

What if i wanted to go with mates ? First i'd have to get hold of them (Can you just wait love, we're going through a tunnel.. " "Can we sit together darlin' ? What do you mean you don't know ?"

All the booking machines will need to be 'live linked' to a central computer - imagine if we sold out..twice over..?

If you can provide against all my salient points in my two emails for under £5000, then you're a man with too much money, too lose..

Sorry..

Re: the 'Sorry' bit, that not me trying to puncture your idea's, and be condescending, but my job as Event Producer was to deal with Account Execs/Managers who came up with 'GREAT' idea's where they had <say> just promised to deliver 'a million Ice Lollies' free across the UK....for typically £5000 or some other notional figure..

My job is to then, pull it apart, and work out the logistical side of it, with costs.

Of course, in the Acct Execs eyes, they just saw a great one to one marketing experience, a million times over.
For £5000, I saw the back of a truck being opened up and it being pushed out by the box load...

No worries. Ideas should be challenged so to test them, but the real point is that the status quo is not an option and is not good enough. thi idea is one of many to raise the clubs profile and sell to a new or just forgotten target market.

The answer to the point you raise is that (and there will be others if we think about it Im sure) tickets are now bought online anyway. As such then any palm top can be used to access the clubs site to buy a ticket for a customer and his / her friends / family. Thereafter it is a leaflet promotion with clear explanation of how the customer can do it themselves when they get home. Cash would not seem appropriate so unless a solution can be thought of, then its card sales only.

Er yes, , i suppose I am keen. Its bugged me since a teenager in the 80's that this club has not been the best at selling to a large target audience.

MA? Micky Adams?.. No only kidding, well Ive done a bit of marketing yes, and its in the family though I went into a different field professionally.

2-2. Come on Albion !
