Is this the most overwhelmingly negative reaction there has ever been to a Brighton signing / resigning?

Has there been anyone with such a large fan base constituency strongly against bringing in or retaining a player?

I am not a fan of this extension but I know nothing and if RDZ is IN, I am OK with that, now who are we signing who will play regularly?

We have all been told about what the likes Of Lallana, Milner and Welbeck etc bring to the group everyday.

And Milner covers a lot of holes. You need players like that.

That's a very patronising attitude.

It isn't difficult for anyone to 'grasp'. Everyone here understands the theory - that a young squad needs some older, wiser, more experienced players to guide them.

That doesn't mean that we all have to agree on WHO those experienced players should be.

Personally, I'd like them to be a) more regularly available than James Milner, and b) able to make a more telling contribution on the pitch than the (38 year old version of) James Milner.

Why is THAT 'so difficult to grasp'?

I feel particularly passionate about this particular topic as I'm a massive fan of JM and it seems glaringly obvious to me that his vast experience is of huge benefit to the club. Looking at your posts on this thread you clearly feel just as passionately against it. Also reassuringly you appear to take umbrage to anyone else who takes an opposing opinion to yours.

No umbrage taken here at anyone's choice of favourite players - such things can only be a matter of opinion. Umbrage taken only at your suggestion that anyone not in favour of Milner's contract extension was incapable of understanding the reasons for it. Everyone understands the rationale - some just disagree with it.

You are welcome to be a 'massive fan' of anyone you like - though I'll assume that your massive fandom in this case, is based on what you've watched him do for previous clubs. It could only be.

Tho not so glaringly obvious to many. And despite him somehow being fluent in Spanish, how many of these uber-cocky South American kiddies are actually going be paying much attention to (in their view, maybe) some old guy twice their age telling them how to play the game. In their eyes, they're all hotshot wunderkidz, they've probably been told that since about the age of four. Would be amazed if their reaction to Milner was anything other than 'Vale Boomer'

Unfortunately as a Full back he tends not to cover the hole that’s stops the opposition winger marauding towards our goal.

Doesn’t exactly smack of ambition does it? he will be 39 before his deal ends and he can hardly run as it is. Welbeck has played the majority of games this season 4 goals and 1 assist you can see why we haven’t scored more than one goal in the last 15 games.

We have players over 30 who will contribute more on the pitch than Milner will if we ‘want the experience’
Seeing a game out for Milner these days is him fouling players because they all burn past him with ease.

Their operating model is very different to ours - they can afford to pay top whack for the finished article - i.e. Tonali and Diaby both around the £50mill mark.

If you look at our transfer dealings since c 2020/21 we've clearly re-thought our strategy since getting burned with Locadia and Jahanbaksh and spent relatively big on talented teenagers but - crucially - brought in older pros who have been serial winners, like Veltman, Welbeck, Lallana and Milner. This creates a positive culture that is sustainable.

They say that c. 26 - 28 years old is when footballers often peak but we appear to have just 3 players in that age category - Pervis, Igor and Mitoma. By comparison, Newcastle have 5, West Ham have 7, Villa have 10.

I see Sanchez, White, Biss, Maupay are in that category, with Cucurella and MacAllister very close.

I fully expect that if we are ever to match - or improve upon - last season then we'll need a higher ratio of 26-28 year olds coming through and sticking with us, and it shows the importance of hanging on to someone like 26 year old Mitoma.

Watching the gaffer’s presser in Japan, asked about Milner by a Japanese journo about his importance to the team (?! weird one) he says he’s very important, incredible pro, yadda yadda.

But out of nowhere he says “he’s a midfielder” with absolute certainty and without prompting. Very, very good news! He was dreadful at fullback for us

Also, very amusing press conference because I think the gaffer was getting a little impatient waiting to hear the translations…

He rolls his eyes quite a few times. I don’t think he’s being rude, just uncomfortable waiting and shifting awkwardly in his seat.

Especially funny was when he was asked about the team coping with the humidity, and made a joke comparing to the weather in Brighton and nobody laughed (because they don’t speak English). And then again when translated into Japanese and again nobody laughed, despite his hopeful looks out to the media when he heard “Brighton” in the translation.

Good to hear Milner seen as a midfielder.
I'm sure if he's fit he'll get the 20 appearances he needs.
