It's interesting that we seem to be going very early with our transfer business this year. What with Pedro seemingly a done deal, Milner a real possibility and Alex Scott on the cards, I am assuming we are trying to give RdZ a good pre season to prepare the squad

I think we do need to think about the defence though. Assuming Colwill is off and Van Hecke also? But when (hopefully) Veltman signs a new contract Tony and RdZ will still have to work out who else we need in defence.
Surely, back up for Pervis is essential and another centre half?
Going early before we have a second load of cash coming in maybe a factor as well?

seems ok to me just don't spend to much money on a player that could be injury prone.
It will be a free, a singing on fee, and appearance-related pay. Plus a coaching role. What's not to like? ??? :rave:

I would have thought he'd go to Leeds as club captain in next season's failed attempt to get promoted.
He has his reputation to think about. ???

And who could resist a move to the English San Francisco (without the annoying fog)?

I find this an odd one. Milner has spent his entire career up North, and has probably never even needed to move house. Why head south now, for what will probably be a one year deal?
There's every chance he will want to move into management when he hangs up his boots. A season working under the hippest hottest young manager on the planet would be a very appealing education.

When we signed Lallana he hadn’t played more that 15 league games in a season for 3 seasons at Liverpool.
Milner hasn’t played less than 22 league games in a season for 12 years.
Most often he plays over 30, plus plenty of minutes in the Champions League.

He’s obviously not the future stars we’re used to, but it’s about balance and finding value that other clubs ignore. Milner’s age is why he is available to us but I would guess the data profile for him is aligned with a much younger player.

At Forest on Wednesday the game noticeably started to slip away from us and being able to have brought Milner on at that stage would have been exactly what we needed.
Added to that , perhaps the club see him as future replacement in Bruno role ?

I assume you intended to post on the Most Dislikable People in Football thread?

He talks a good game.

“I get the fans”, “I get the club”. Endearing him to Toffees and Chavs supporters who saw/see him as part of their circle-the-wagons fight against a mocking football world.

His private school education giving him an edge with pre-Agincourt inspiration.

Then both clubs lost football matches on repeat.

This. Not entirely his fault that successive basket case clubs thought he was ready for a top level management role, but he clearly isn't.

As for Milner, it's interesting. No idea if this is a serious rumour or equally if it was nonsense. Entirely depends on his character and reputation within the game. As others have said, he's very clean living and a role model in that regard, so I'm not surprised it's a rumour really.

Haven't seen this anywhere but it seems Brighton are very interested in signing James Milner, 37, from Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer. Burnley are also in range. I read it on an obscure football rumours site.

Would he really be a good signing? I feel he would only play a dozen games or so a season. His wages would be extremely high as well but if he became a coach he'd certainly make a good one.

Thoughts?
