James has had three dreadful games at right back.
Chris Sutton on Radio 5 said he was roasted by Doku. Could have shown the white flag.
In his defence, everybody will be roasted by Doku. But it’s not working with Milner there so far.

I always felt that Milner was a shrewd addition in terms of seeing our tight games, especially in Europe… in a DM (no real pace required) kind of a role… I rather assumed Roberto would see it that way too…

To play him as an attacking FB against someone (anyone) with a smidgin of pace is foolhardy… once as an experiment maybe, twice maybe if needs must BUT today wasn’t the day for me… it’s not Milner’s fault to be fair, he’s a pro and he does what he’s asked… Roberto needs a solution at FB that can deal with pace and he needs to find it fast.

It’s going to have to be a dev squad player… letting Offiah leave looks a bit daft… Gross is nearly as bad… too slow… Igor makes Gary Hobson look dynamic.. With March out and Lamptey so fragile we’re pathetically under resourced in wide defensive terms… for all the praise we get, in terms of succession planning etc. this FB issue has to be deemed a critical blind spot.

It’s going to cost us, and although I think we’ll be okay in terms of the PL, any chance of repeated glory… well, it was clearly compromised by expecting a 38 year old to step up and handle the rigours of the worlds best wide players.

Hey ho, rant over.

I think milner is RDZs player, he loves him. But I think the realisation has hit now. If Milly starts as LB Vs Ajax we are fooked.

Milner’s has a brilliant career playing any position bar striker/goalie. At his age no way has he got the pace to play PL fullback.

Begging RDZ to stop this  .

Gross has sometimes been a shite FB for us too and he’s 5 years younger.

just back.

Milner was awful, and Adingra was also culpable as in the first half, he did not tuck in and offer any support for the first 30 minutes. Milner simply doesn’t have the legs any more for 1 vs 1.

Doku is so one footed, after his initial start when he was almost unplayable, it quickly became obvious that he uses his left leg to stand on and little more.

Other than a couple of dives he was relatively anonymous once we worked him out…

Just gutted for Solly.

Any ideas what RDZ is trying to do with repeated attempts at playing a 37 year old as a FB, when it fails every time?

March is a Premier League standard full back so when he plays winger the FB has seriously good defensive support. Adingra isn't that kind of player. Really left Milner exposed but he also looks like he hasn't got the pace to be playing their anymore.

I think RdZ got it wrong again today, not only Milner, but not matching up more in midfield from the start.

If he’s going to play anywhere it needs to be more centrally, as he won’t get exposed so much. However, we might be forced to start him at LB in the next game.

Adingra has played a defensive role in the past at USG, so he is capable.

Dunk was giving him a severe rollicking in the first half.

My thoughts exactly.

Against Villa played two lightweights in CM against three powerhouses. Every good team (perhaps I missed something) play three in the middle one way or another. The battle is critical. Last season Caicedo-MacA-Gross or one other was a winner.

Going to support Adingra a little. He did retreat to help Milner but Milner instructed him straight away to push further up in doing so exposing his position. Milner was so out of position at times it was laughable.

Apart from one crunching tackle Milner didn't get close to anyone at all. His legs have gone.

He can player there against the lesser teams, as Gross did last season, and do a job.
But up against any team better than relegation fodder, he is a liability.

The thing I’m struggling to get my head around is that we’re a bit light in midfield which is where Milner would provide much more use. Squeezing him in at right back with the hope of him floating into the middle just isn’t working due to his lack of pace.
I thought when we signed him that he’d be used to cover in midfield and provide experience in Europe.
