Does the fact that he hasnt started much tell you anything?
The tedious AJ debate can go on and on.
I have seen enough On the field, and in potter’s judgment, to believe it unlikely he will suddenly become a consistently influential Prem player. That’s not to say he’s not capable of The odd great moment, as he’s shown.
In a lesser league with a team that has more possession in forward areas, he’d probably do Very well.

That’s all well and good but not what you said. I’m just genuinely curious how you can arrive at the conclusion he’s “not a consistent performer”

In such a key position we need a more consistent performer than Ali J, folks. However much we want him to do well. That’s the long and short of it.

When the guy has hardly started last season?

That’s not quite I said, as you are right that he can’t be judged over a full season.
He’s had enough game time in cups and the league for a level of scrutiny though.
I’ve seen him meekly drift out of games, be quite slow and weak on the ball.
I’m not ignoring the Chelsea goal though, which was sensational technique. He has also put some decent crosses in.
I’m left wanting him to do well and the Bournemouth goal was a season highlight.
But Ultimately I don’t think he’s good enough for us.

To extend the logic of playing Ali J upfront, why not try Tolaj and Yapi there too. We could get Cashman back from loan. Maybe they could work as a three?
You never know, it could work Amazingly.
I can’t think of any reason why not to give it a go.

Cashman is on loan? Strange - he's on the bench for the U23s today.

I think if there wasn't a plan for Alireza he'd have been loaned or sold. He's listed on the website as a Forward and I agree that Potter's approach is to use players flexibly and blur some of the distinctions between roles depending on the opponents. Can he score goals? Yes. Should he be given a chance to prove it? Absolutely.

Totally agree.

The nay-sayers with stats etc trying to 'prove' he is shite obviously know far more than GP.

Their arguments so far have revolved around not being given extended game time by CH or GP even after playing well, is that he is clearly not up to scratch in training. Going to be interesting to see if he can get that game time to prove a point. He’s not going to do it if he keeps being dropped after playing well.

I understand why CH didn’t play him but I have no idea why GP hasn’t.

These aren't the players you're looking for.

We're trying to offload him back to AZ Alkmaar according to their director Max Huiberts.

So that would suggest where he stands in Potter's plans.

I think that would be a shame - he's better than Locadia and more of a team player than Andone. As with anyone leaving, do we have a better replacement in the squad or imminently signing?

That's not what I said.

I said if they don't perform as well or score goals we'll go down. I'm talking about the strikers who scored last season.

They are taking a risk, pays off we're fine, doesn't pay off we're down.

Well that goes for the whole team. If they don't perform well we we be relegated. Hardly a shocking thought

And some interesting facts:

Yep, people think their own subjective thoughts are more important, Ali J has some bloody impressive stats. I would love to hear from Potter his reasoning behind not using him. Don't get me wrong this would not be a rhetorical question, I have a great deal of respect for what GP is doing and am genuinely interested in his rational.

Impressive where? Holland? Iran? And why didn’t Hughton use him either?

The thing is the stats show the direct opposite.

How, where, what? We’d all like him to come good but where’s all this empirical evidence? Even so, somebody once said some famous about statistics and footballs not baseball great film and story as it was. If Ali J was capable of turning games and scoring goals in the PL, surely we’d have seen more by now? Hopefully it’s third time lucky but it’s got to be more likely he’ll be released after another disappointing season.

I think you, Vagabond, missed the point on "be careful with raw statistics".

Both the AJ-negative stats posted by Johnny Roastbeef some pages back and these AJ-positive stats share the same massive flaw that they are only based on 307 minutes of play. Its just not enough to be of any kind of use. Take a random 307 minutes out of Gary Dohertys career and he might look like Glenn Murray or Harry Kane. Take a random 307 minutes out of Lewis Dunks career and he might look like Paolo Maldini or Gary Doherty, depending on which those 307 minutes are.

When reaching 1000 minutes or so it starts to get interesting and at 2000 minutes you can get a decent picture. But 307 minutes is just too little and too random to say "Ali J is a shit winger / Ali J would be PL top scorer if he got the chance".

Sure, it is a very small sample size, but it is all we have to go on, and it surely is enough to suggest we should try playing him in a forward role. Then of course there is his previous records for other clubs which once again suggest he should be given a chance in the role to which he is best suited.

Yes, know that. But it’s HOLLAND not here. He’s been here for two seasons.
