Shocking. He quit the show in January due to ill health, but at the time they were saying it was a break, and he was looking forward to returning.

R.I.P.

Actor Clive Hornby, who plays Jack Sugden in Emmerdale, has died aged 63.

Clive joined Emmerdale in 1980 and remained the longest-serving cast member in the history of the soap.

Emmerdale producer Anita Turner said: "This is a devastating loss and we are all deeply saddened.

"Clive will be greatly missed by everyone who has worked with him on Emmerdale during the past 28 years.

"He was a hugely popular and well-respected member of cast and a terrific actor. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."

Wasn't he the very miserable one? And had a younger brother that always made him seem boring? Not seen it since 1984, so working on old memories.

Joe Sugden

They also named a horse Joe Sugden and it was one of my favourites, won at Epsom on Derby day in the late 80,s and I went LARGE on it.

Didn't they sing 'Grandad'?
No, that was Jack Dunn, used to be in Dad's Army. Unless I'm thinking of the bloke who did the John Smith's ads?

In all seriousness I wondered what Hornby had been doing since he stopped making model railways.

He's written a number of books including 'Fever Pitch', 'About A Boy', and 'High Fidelity'.

Although he did admittedly get some help with 'High Fidelity' from Leroy, Danny and the rest of The Kids From Fame.

I presume he was still filming, as he died suddenly (well not literally on set).

Wonder how they'll write that one into the script?

I've got it! A passenger plane crashes into the village one night, wiping out a number of occupa.....

....oh.
