New Alemannia Aachen striker Chris Iwelumo has revealed to skysports.com his reasons for turning down a new contract with former club Brighton & Hove Albion.
The former Stoke City hit-man completed his move to the German second division outfit on Tuesday - signing a two-year contract, with an option to extend it beyond that period.

The 26-year-old claimed his reason for rejecting a new contract with The Seagulls was that both sides could not agree on a relocation package for him and his wife to the South Coast.

"They offered me a two-year contract," Iwelumo told skysports.com. "It was a good contract, but the one thing that wasn't there was a relocation package.

"That was something I tried to get to change, but they (Brighton) were adamant in their ways.

"It was frustrating because everyone knew I loved it at Brighton and I wanted to become a Brighton player."

The marksman stated his displeasure at reports last week that claimed he had made unreasonable wage demands to the Withdean Stadium club.

He stated that the unavailability of manager Mark McGhee, who was in the United States, held up contract talks.

"Mark McGhee offered a contract and I rejected it straight away," Iwelumo added.

"Before I knew anything, Mark McGhee was in America for three-and-a-half weeks, with no one able to contact him, so it was annoying for me to be waiting for the phone to go.

"What came out in the papers last week was blown out of proportion, making me the character that I am not.

"I wasn't asking for silly money - I wouldn't with the (financial) condition football is in.

"That cut deep last week. It really, really got to me."

With his move to Alemannia complete, Iwelumo has been pleased with the way pre-season training has gone since he arrived at his new club.

"It's going well. We're still doing double sessions, so I'm trying to get used to that," he said.

"All the boys are tremendous and I feel at home. I joined up with them this week and they were at a training camp in Holland.

"I think it's the right move for me and my wife.

"The ambition at this club is to get to the first division and become and maintain ourselves as a Bundesliga One team."

Iwelumo revealed that he was in talks with several English clubs before deciding on his move to Germany.

"I was in talks with Doncaster," said Iwelumo. "Colchester, Stockport and Northampton were clubs I also spoke to while Milton Keynes just called me but nothing more."

Much as we may not like it the price difference in property between the North or Midlands and South East is always going to be a stumbling block in getting players to move South.

Common sense tells you that if your house up North is worth £100k you are not going to get the same within daily travelling distance of Brighton under £175k if not higher.

A mate of mine bought a 4 bedroom terraced house in Stoke about 2-3 years ago for something around £40-50k. Go figure what that would get you in Brighton or even Burgess Hill...not being funny but the patio at the back of my North Laine gaff is probably worth more than that.

at the end of the day, all though he is a presence upfront, he wasnt indespensible. we have a serious lack of strikers, but for the same sort of money we were offering him, i think we can tempt someone better than him

i dont blame him for going, he done well in the few games he was here, had some inspired haircuts, and a great combination of tallness, darkness, and erm a scottish accent

in fairness, this albania assnam whoever it was he joined are in the UEFA cup, so thats gotta be a bonus

Of course it was about money. What is a "relocation package" if it's not money?

We can't afford to have players on bigger wages just because they've come down from oop North. The other players would go spare.

If he wants the same house in leafy Sussex he has to get real.

Would you expect your family to go from a nice 4 bedroom house to a small flat that the sale of your house would finance?

I don't blame him for going and I think McGhee offered him what he was worth.

For the money we would have to pay to relocate him McGhee obviously believes we can get a better player.

I don't blame him for going. But for a bright guy, I can't believe he seriously expects to play for Scotland. One of the reasons he gave for going to Germany was that Vogts would notice him more. Scottish football may not exactly be in one of its glory periods but it does not need journeymen footballers of Big Chris' calibre surely.

To be honest, he will not live in Stoke, I wouldn't imagine, probably Debyshire along the A50 or Cheshire, poss. South Staffs. Any of which nowdays you won't find a 4 bed detached for less than 250,000. It is not like Sussex prices, but it is not far off, If he lived in Tunstall in a 3 bed semi, then maybe 150,000.

To be honest, he would be on a fair wage at Brighton but maybe he is trying to salt away a little cash rather than blow it all on a large mortgage. Anyway, thenks for the Penalty and good luck in Germany. We will find better though IMHO.
