I have let the pan boil dry on more than one occasion, but realised when I could smell something, just before they exploded. My husband liked to recall that story until one day, HE let the pan boil dry, panicked, took it off the cooker, put it on the work top....and burnt a huge hole in the work top! Strangely, he doesn't mention it very much now!!
