I've got a licence to smoke ..and I know its going straight to the NHS

Put the foul ciggies up to £15 packet and £20 tax on roll ups, anyone caught smuggling the foul stuff into the UK should be banged up for 5 years, then and only then maybe us NON smokers will not have to put up the foul smell of smokers.

Harsh but needed, yes smokers you f***ing stink.

brighton, actually
hmm, could be interesting when someone sues the govt / tobacco firms later on, saying that they were given permission (and thereby encouraged?) to smoke..?

just ban smoking. get everyone healthier, less sick days = more earnings, more taxes to pay/make up for the 'lost' tax revenue from people giing up..

also, save squillions in long term are, down the line..

thanks for pointing that out. but you forgot the additional billions from the actual industry itself, the corporation tax on Imperial and BAT is another billion at least plus the tax on (and employment of) tens of thousands.

Why dont we just making smoking illegal? We cant afford to.

Meanwhile, through the EU we subsidise tobacco growers in Portugal, Spain and Italy.

We're in a good situation now for smoking. Smokers are banished to outside, where the only people they can harm is themselves. The taxes they pay on cigarettes is enough to pay for smoking related illnesses. Cigarettes are expensive but still just about affordable for people who want them. Why does there need to be more laws to try and stop smokers?

Even taking into consideration people who don't want to be harmed by other people's smoke, the smoking ban prevents that so that it no longer a valid argument. Why does there need to be more change?

I suppose there would be some good in gradually preventing new people taking up smoking - I think a licence would stop a lot of young people getting addicted as it's another effort which some won't make - but I do think there's a point where the government has to accept that they can't just point-blank stop smoking unless there's a change in culture. That has to happen gradually, it can't just be enforced in a couple of crazy schemes.

The funny thing is with this no smoking in public places law, I find myself inhaling MORE smoke then I did before the laws were introduced. I'm final year Uni student so haven't got an awful lot of time to go out of a night, so smoking in bars etc. hasn't been an issue really.
However as smoking isn't allowed inside bars, a daily walk into town or to Uni I find myself walking past buildings with hundreds of people standing outside blowing their smoke into my face. Before the ban they could just smoke inside in their designated smoking rooms. Funny really :thud:.

I give it six months before the licence to drink is suggested.

If so, will they bring out an advanced one?

To be honest I wouldn’t mind having one of them really. Anyone that causes trouble through being pissed up will have the licenses revoked and within a few months pubs and clubs will be free of annoying young chavs.

Sod this new "tax". What is needed is a licence to have children. You never know, in 100 years Croydon may be empty.

Would you have to sit an exam? Practical test?
