Its turned into a bloody awful Summer again

It may not have been the sunniest August (it certainly was before then) but it's been consistently warm and dry (too dry for my garden). We live in a temperate climate - given that, it's been a very good Summer.

Is the Summer May, June, July and August? If so, then until August, the Summer was staggering:

May: 4% more sunshine than average; 63% of the average rainfall; temp 0.3% below average.
June: 39% more sunshine; 64% of rainfall;2.3c higher than average.
July: 1% more sunshine; 63% of rainfall; 1.4c higher.

No figures for August, but it seems to be showing far less sunshine than average, far less rain and higher temperatures. It's the sunshine that's gone in August because of the cloud cover. But looking at the above, only the likes of US would complain.

PS April strated this all off with 49% more sunshine; half the average rainfall and temps 2c above average. It has in fact been a very long and early Summer.

Here in Somerset, it's been dismal for the last few weeks. Hot few days at start of July, but since then, more like autumn. August especially has been bloody awful, more like October: often cloudy, breezy, not warm, and most days have seen showers or longer spells of rain and drizzle.

This is the fourth consecutive 'summer' which has been a soggy disappointment.

Oh, and what's the forecast for most of Britain for the weekend and into next week? Yes, you've guessed it; more cloudy, wet and windy weather.

Still, bollox to it - we're off to south-west France today on our hols, where it's 30+ C with unbroken sunshine.

The sun needs to shine for it to be a good summer imo. Mostly overcast sometimes rainy above average temperatures seem to cut it for plenty of Brits who can't go out in the sun without looking like a prawn. I can't imagine a single sun lover thinking that this has been a good summer. Sure there was a sustained period in July but August has been totally totally shit. Today is even worse than usual

Off to SW France today, forecast sunny and 35, that'll do nicely

Its gone 9am and the lights are all on in my living room. Yep what a glorious summer. Someone said we had 8-12 weeks of Glorious weather. I must have missed that.

Augudt has been poor for sunshine but every other month of the Summer has had above avergae sunshine, above average temperatures and below average wetness.

I'm arguing that the premise "It's turned into a bloody awful Summer again" is not accurate. August is dreadful for sunshine (though dry and warm). But "the Summer" has not been bloody awful. That's all. Couldn't agree more about August - it's been bloody bleak most days. But it's been a good Summer.

I enjoy a changeable summer. Consistent baking has one unsettled and the tensions in cities rise, sweatbuds forming on everyday-enraged faces. We need a respite, so the pledge of all authorities to ban our use of fluids was unused and canals look filled and slugs sometimes dapple our cracked paving slabs. Only once have i had to cycle to work in an ex-ex-girlfriend's waterproof trousers, so it's not been all bad.
Cycling in foolishly to work this morning i saw a felled sapling no more than 12 foot in height, but i think that might have been rudely kicked in half by a team of drunks who'd have emerged from a gruff pub no more than 10 metres away. It looked like they'd also gone through the bins.

You seem to base it on temperature only. Its not cold but a Summer to me is when you see then Sun every now and then.

Err, no. I'm basing it on sunshine hours ( ie the amount of time it is sunny). Temperatures were higher, rainfall was lower, but critically, the amount of sunshine as been higher than average in May, June and July. Only August has been crap. So I'm basing my argument on sunshine.

I won't argue that August is the key month when most people have their Summer holiday. But to argue that it's becoming a bad Summer because August was poor is wrong IMHO. It's been a better than average Summer for three months until August.

There's a suburb in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne called Brighton. Might be in the other cities too

There's also a suburb in both Sydney and Melbourne (and Adelaide) called Croydon for you to bitch on about.

Not in Brisbane though, Croydon Qland is WAY in the outback north of Cairns.
