Think that's already got GD taken into account. My reckoning is that if Hudds win all their remaining, we need 12 points to tie them on points, but we nudge it on GD. Same for Reading: if they win all remaining, we need 8 points to tie with them (18 available, 10 behind)

We're both right! I looked at SW & Leeds and you have over cooked them by one assuming we beat them on GD - need only one to beat SW and 4 to beat Leeds. You're right with 8 & 12 for Reading and Hudds.

We are 99+% certain to have a home leg second in PO......

Some getting jittery because we've not been fully in the groove over these last two wins, and at the same time think Newcastle and Huddersfield will be relentless.

Its fully understandable football fan psyche, but their fans will be feeling just as nervy - Hudds have won ONE game off the back of two shocking results, Newcastle have scraped past Wigan and Burton by a single late goal.

This is true, whilst we never looked in danger of losing either game we never blew either team away. Last night was one of our better performances but only because Burton were happy to let us control the game. Poor finishing cost us at times but without Ritchie's moment of class we would be nervously looking over our shoulder today.

I would also add that a draw at QPR and at Wolves will not lead to any bed wetting. In fact, as long as we then win our two home games, it's actually probably job done.

A loss wouldn't be helpful though

The team have been reportedly, repeatedly 'not at their best' more often than not since the start of the year. Sure we hack the points out at home, but away form seems to have tailed right off. And we've got FOUR of those still to play. Despite OP's attempt to be first to break the historic good news, it's just stupidly premature. IMHO, like. it's FAR from over.

Our away form hasn't tailed right off, really it hasn't. We are level with Fulham, and joint second only to Newastle for away form, throughout the season.

But Newcastle don't need to be relentless, they only need to match our results (our even score 1 less point than us).

Of course they will, no one is suggesting they won't. But we're not talking about how they feel, we're talking about how we feel. We are of course odds on to finish top two, but it's far from a done deal. Huddersfield had a couple of injuries and a couple of bad results. Looks like they're getting back to full strength already (they're been pretty lucky with injuries all season) and it's far from impossible they'll rack up a shit load of points in their last 7 games. Burnley and us got 17 from our last 7 last season (despite us drawing the last 2). 6 wins and a draw (big ask) puts them on 93. So we'd need 10 from 6. 2 wins, 4 draws, or 3 wins and a draw.

We're very close, but it ain't done.

Well obviously you can't look at the whole season to see it's tailed off or not. We've got 7 points from our last 7 away games. That probably is tailing off a bit.

I'd never heard of the 1956 Grand National example so had a look on youtube.

Check out 6:10 onwards, I have never seen anything like that!

Wow... not seen this....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_Loch

"To do a Devon Loch" is a modern metaphor now sometimes used in sports and otherwise to explain a sudden, last-minute failure of teams or a sportsperson to complete an expected victory

for example:

"Brighton won't do a Devon Loch and lose promotion to Huddersfield after leading them by 12 points" or "Lewis Hamilton surrendering the championship having led Kimi Räikkönen by 17 points with just two races remaining was a Devon Loch calamity"

I'm not talking about the away stats throughout the season, I'm talking about since the start of January. Go look again. A number of the players we've come to heavily rely on simply haven't produced the goods, that we know they can produce, away from home within that time frame.

I was looking at the form guide. I suppose it depends on how many you go back. I was looking at the 8 match guide here.

Yep, that puts us in 8th place (Huddersfield 1st, Newcastle 2nd), when we would have been second before the recent games. And it's worse if you look at the last 7 games. I think it's fair to say our away form has tailed off.

7 points from the last 7 - a point a game - match that means 4 from our last 4 away games. Just over 2 points a game from home games (last 8), would make 4 points realistic - which puts us on 91.

It ain't over.

Nobody has said it's over, but there are some who think our form isn't as good as it is, whilst bigging up Newcastle's and Hudd's form.

Away form is the real concern to me right now. Rediscovery of our mojo and a win tomorrow night would go a huge way to helping settle nerves and hopefully dispirit the last of the chasing pack. What is certain is that we'll have a cracking following at the ground and will make some real noise. We supporters still have a job to do too.

See you at Loftus Road. Sing up all.

Be cautious, by all means, but let us not forget that we are one point behind the leaders, with six to play, and effectively ten points ahead of third.

It is much more likely that we will finish above Newcastle than below Huddersfield.

Ridden our luck? Okay we didn't play our best, but neither Blackburn or Brum did enough to suggest we were lucky. If anything neither side forced us to get out of 2nd gear.

Win 3 of our last 6, and HField will need to win 6 draw 1 of their last 7. They've got 4 sways and play 3 teams with an outside chance of the playoffs. Think we need to show a bit more confidence in our side.

You don't think we rode our luck against Birmingham? If that free kick which left Stockdale flat footed had gone in and not hit the bar it would have been a different game. Imo we are panicking all over the pitch and this is at home and all away games worry me now. We no longer control games and that to me is a worry.

Admittedly Toon and Hudds ( until last night) have been wobbling too

Anyway I'm not saying we'll blow it but I am not anywhere near as confident as so many of the gung ho fans on here are. That's all.

I thought we controlled the Barnsley and Rotherham games pretty well.

Leeds was always going to be tough and Forest, though we didn't play well, was abit of a freak result.

If you need to put your mind at ease, our worst return on 6 games for the entire season has been 9 pts which would see off all but Huddersfield mathematically and require them to win all but one (they'd need to at least draw this too) of their remaining games.

As I said, we need 2x wins as fast as possible and we will cruise to it, but draws away from home at this stage are not bad results either, assuming we can rely on our home form for at least 4 pts, preferably 6. With 2 wins and 4 draws Huddersfield would need to win all their remaining games.

I've been loathed to write off Huddersfield all season because they've already proved they can put a string of 5-6 wins together, but the teams they will be required to do this against now is going to be a tough ask even for them. Even if they did manage it, we would have to go on a Dec-Jan last season type capitulation to let them in, where we had an injury crisis in a much weaker squad than we have now where we have no injuries other than Duffy.

As it stands they still need 4 games to overtake us (don't forget we also need to be losing games at the same time), if we do the job tomorrow evening they will need 5 games. They are fast running out of road. Stay positive.
