Does it keep flying through the air for a mile until it hits some poor unsuspecting person in the distance??

Actually, there are apparently a lot of people killed by firearms in the middle-east, and in central America, because they discharge guns at celebrations and street demostrations. The lead fired into the sky often just comes back down into a packed crowd.
