You might as well blame the weather or the deterioration in the quality of TV programs over the same period.

Tubthumper,I expect more people turned to drink after watching/hearing Ed Balls's pitiful performance in the Commons last Thursday...............or ,of course, they may be celebrating that a party with such a deadbeat Shadow Chancellor will not get into power at the next General Election.
Anyway, alcohol consumption per head of capita has been falling in this country for a number of years.
Can't comment on drugs, but there seem to be plenty of coke heads on NSC,who may be more informed on the subject than yours truly!

All that says is that there is an increase in forty-somethings with health problems related to alcohol and drugs. You might just as well blame history tbh. People in their 40s now will have been among the first ravers and acid house casualties, a scene known for excess. Now they are in their 40s, a time when you have more disposable income than when you're in your twenties but with less opportunity to go out, it makes sense that the habit for many continues in some form. Given how stressful and 'always on' modern life can appear and it's little wonder many people feel they need a bottle of wine to relax with. I know it helps me and I have to be careful not to do it every night.

And why is it that as soon as you go to a hospital you are 'putting a strain on the NHS'?

Come on, can't we just blame the Tories?

Try getting your source from an independent media outlet next time eh?

The NHS's Hospital Guide where the figures originate seems fairly independent to me.

Isn't it because we're all celebrating the good times?

Aldi, Lidl, Weatherspoons,Primark and Poundland are all celebrating good times.

to be fair to the Guardian, they arent making any association to politics or policies, only comment is that the idea only youth binge drink is being shown to be false. the policitcal angle here is all Tubthumpers.

There are some great deals on champagne at the moment. Heidsieck Monopole half price at Sainsburys

Cheers for the heads up. Me and my socialist chums will be heading to Sainsburys at the first opportunity.

When will people stop bending over for the corporate and political elites? How bad does it have to get before people will unite and fight for equality?

That's a good question. Much, much worse than we have it in this country is the answer.

There is a big hint in that Guardian story - enough people can afford to casually drink themselves into hospital for a paper to print a story about it. If it was so bad that would be a story about people starving to death.

Interesting.

At the last general election Cameron and his cheif political strategist, Osborne, failed to beat a very unpopular prime minister. No Prime Minister, including the hallowed Margaret, has increased their share of the vote as an incumbant. So given that they couldnt get enough people to vote for them last time, they dont stand an earthlys next time, after which people will have had 5 years of pay freezes and cuts, high inflation, high youth unemployment, being shafted by the utility companies and the little bubble of 'good news' fuelled by low interest rates and a mickey mouse policy to get people to buy houses that they cant afford will have well and truly burst.

Added to which the gin sodden, tweed wearing nutters in the Shires will be voting UKIP because Cameron and Clegg have done stupid things like support gay marriage, the Lib Dems will be deserting their usual also rans for Labour because theyve stood by and watched whilst policies such as the bedroom tax have raped the poor and what do you have?

A general election that could well see a deadbeat shadow chancellor get the keys to number 11.

I don't think that is true. People are more connected than ever, and the universal distrust of government is higher than ever, this coupled with a growing awareness of corporate corruption and exploitation is leading to people wanting drastic change.

People are already desperate and struggling to make ends meet - they don't need to be starving before they are willing to fight against this inequality.

Many people are unaware that Iceland recently had a revolution, by nationalising the main bank, prosecuting the criminal bankers, forcing the government into resignation, writing a new constitution so it can never happen again , and improving their democracy so that regular people are in government rather than career politicians with corporate interests. This is something that we and the rest of the world should emulate.
