They have been getting the sums wrong on the numbers round on countdown for years if that is the case

I don't think that's right. The calculations are perfectly valid and they do 5 or so discrete calculations, one after the other. It's just that they aren't written down in proper mathematical fashion.

Of course that's the case. Unless there are brackets around addition/subtraction then multiplication and division is always done first.

Must be an age thing then, they never taught multiplication and division first during my education

If the multiplication was first it would read 1 + (10 x 2) = ?

You can't answer that. What is a single boot worth 1,2,5,47.9666666,£12,banana?

I've got 48.

Last one being 2+10(12) x4 = 48

EDIT:

It's 21.

There is only ONE boot at the bottom.

Although... That does not actually confirm the value of a single boot as being half that of two. There is no indicator.

FFS 1. three horses = 30(horse=10) 2. one Horse + two horse shoes = 18(horse shoes =4) 3. one Boot - one Horse shoes =2 (boot=2) so Horse 10 +Boot 2 = 12 x Horse shoes 4 =48 although possible 44 if boot one rather than two

FFS you are wrong

The problem is ambiguous and inconsistent, ie. three horses are shown as three images, but two horseshoes are shown as one image. And that's ignoring the lack of brackets.

We have no way of telling the true value of one horse shoe or one boot as the previous sums have only given us the sum values of the symbols for 2 horse shoes and 2 boots, it is not necessarily correct to assume that those values are halved as they may have a different value that is never given making the puzzle in its current form impossible to complete

It's not an age thing, you just weren't taught very well.
