I think fondly of Gillan, mainly because he always reminds me of the odd coterie of late seventies NWOBHM loving Ipswich Town players, led by the late Paul Mariner. They provided such a contrast to all of the players appearing in Match Weekly in the eighties: Favourite Food - Steak & Chips, Favourite Drink - Lager, Favourite Music - Luther Vandross etc. For divergence from the mainstream there seemed to be only them and later Pat Nevin who famously had to hide his NME in a copy of the Sun when in the dressing room.

Gareth Ainsworth has inherited their crown.

Another for UB40, also Eric 'send them back' Clapton and Phil Collins (amazing how someone without any singing voice could have so many hits as a singer). I also find Tom Jones's shouting a bit much. I know they are very popular with some but what I cannot understand is that these are people who also like magnificent stuff such as anything involving Bob Mould, Sonic Youth, Throwing Muses etc. ... but Pearl Jam are their favourites.
I am dumbfounded. Am I missing something?

I'm with you on that. Like a lot of the grunge lot I see Pearl Jam as a dodgy metal band who grabbed their big chance on the back of the Seattle sound breakthrough. They always sounded like absolutely all of their influences were from huge classic rock bands in contrast with Cobain's love of the ephemeral underground. If one rock band is looking for inspiration from Led Zep and Kiss and another from the Vaselines and the Meat Puppets, its not hard to guess which is likely to produce something different sounding and interesting.

I thought that at first. However, I've since listened to and enjoyed a bit of the drone stuff that influenced MMM and I'd have to say that when you return to the album having gained a small understanding of where the likes of Lamont Young were coming from, then you fully appreciate that you're absolutely right, it is still absolute cock.
