I always think of these as the same film really. I've never found fault in either of them. The first was as close to the book as it's possible to be, the second took the story to its utterly believable natural conclusion (and even though I've only seen it once, I haven't ever emotionally considered the third film as anywhere equal, or indeed even related). I think that if one is drawn to the 'epic' story, The Godfather ticks every single box.
The relatively recent highly-praised are often the focus of my ire - I remember being swayed by public opinion and watched Birdman, which I thought awful. And I will die on the hill that all of Christopher Nolan's films - not ideas - will soon be judged as really not that good at all.
