What’s happened to the signage ? I know it all gets removed / taken off at world cups and euros so have they covered the American Express community stadium sign on the front ?

I would hope not, after all why should they? The game will be televised from inside the stadium, not outside it.
If they take some footage before/after the game outside, and American Express is on the stadium then that's up to them.

Surely?

Fans are going to the stadium, not just watching on TV. Haven't been for a while, but I'd wager every mention of Amex has been removed/covered.

Correct. Not sure about the player pictures above the store but if Biss was there expect being changed anyway.. American Express has been totally removed.

I was there for volunteer training today and couldn't see any mention of American Express but didn't check out everything. The Albion pictures above the club shop have been changed to Euro stuff as have the heroes banners along the west side.

Interesting point. Do people still refer to the University of Bolton Stadium as the Reebok?

Not that I ever have to refer to it but yes, if someone asked me, "Quick, what's the name of Bolton's ground?" I'd say 'Reebok'. I have a vague recollection that the name had changed (in fact I have a vague recollection that we've discussed it on here before), but I had no idea it was now the University of Bolton stadium. Again, I may have been told (probably again on here) what the new name was but I'd forgotten - and no doubt I will do again! Ditto Huddersfield which used to be the McAlpine, was John Smith and is now 'Something Else'.

If the Amex changes its name in my lifetime I wonder if I'd stop calling it the Amex? Part of me thinks I won't, but then I never refer to it now as 'Falmer Stadium', even though we called it that for years before it was the Amex.

Back on the thread topic: why is it called the 'Community' stadium? It's not owned by the community. Sure we're allowed to attend events there, but if I were to try and organise a match up there with my mates I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be allowed.

As an aside, Sussex CCC are forever renaming the County Ground after that years Sponsor, which hasn't been a great success as in:

Where are you going today?

To the County Ground to watch us loose - at least I can have a pint of Harveys and an ice cream...

American Express were persuaded to sponsor Albion in the Community by Dick Knight when he was chairman. Then, when the stadium was ready, the naming rights included community. Tony Bloom carried on with the Community work. You could help the AITC and organise something for the over 50s like walking football or the disabled.

Was certainly the case for the makeover for the Rugby World Cup match between South Africa and Japan. Even Dick's Bar had been rebranded as the Press Lounge or something. I swear I was about the only person wearing the stripes in the entire sell-out crowd. It was actually vaguely spooky, like walking into a parallel universe where everything is the same... but different

According to radio 5, minutes ago, there is a world cup game tonight at 'Brighton's Amex stadium'.

TalkSPORT referred to it as the Brighton Community Stadium before Laura Woods said the Amex

It's amazing how much the Amex has come to be known as the Amex by Brighton fans really. We fought so long for 'Falmer', I could never foresee it being known as anything other than that to the fans, regardless of who paid what to have their name on the door. Yet I don't think I've ever met a Brighton fan who calls it 'Falmer'. I guess 'Amex' is quite a nice word to say, it rolls off the tongue quite well. I wonder if we'd have the same phenomenon if it had been called The Focus DIY Stadium or something.

It was part of the original deal with American Express - It was never intended that this was a deal to "grow the brand" or whatever, it was a demonstration on its connection with the city and community. In effect they were partnering with the 'community' rather than sponsoring a football club. That all changed over time of course but that was the genesis of it.

Peter Godfrey, now non-exec board member of the club, was instrumental in getting the US Amex mothership on board with the club when he was an Amex President overseeing operations out of Edward Street/wedding cake.
