Brighton factually.....
I showed this advert to my 12year old daughter last night, who could not believe this was allowed at anytime to be on tv.
My wife remembers the advert, and thinks although it is funny, is now gladly a thing of the past.
Me I think it’s funny, and probably because I’m a white heterosexual 50 plus male, don’t really think beyond that, I guess that’s wrong.

Is this a timeless harmless funny advert ?
or an embarrassment that quite rightly a thing of the past.

I can see it’s not entirely appropriate in todays climate - old as I am I do understand that and don’t expect to see adverts like this anymore, fair enough

Sometimes I worry that when we are getting vocal about the slightest things in life we detract from the completely unacceptable sexist/ racist abusive behaviour which needs stamping out. Being upset about ads like this tends to weaken the real issues. I felt people had to really want to be offended by the Tiger Woods tampon incident in order to be outraged

I always enjoy people being amazed / furious when showing younger people who didn’t grow up in the context of the time something only to be met with “well that was cringeworthy”.

And by “enjoy” I mean “am bored by how much of our discourse is taken up by this shite”.

Absolutely disgusting. Its this type of thing that actively encouraged and justified shopkeepers of a certain mindset not to sell these chocolate bars to girls or women. Its misogyny in its purest form, he might as well have punched her in the face for asking. We're potentially only one step away from that happening, thanks to adverts like this going out and classing women ("girls") as second class citizens compared with men. Everyone involved should be utterly ashamed.

Etc.

Funny harmless advertising from a less Woke era. Bit of fun and gimmicky to sell a few bars of chocolate.

However, society has moved on from the Benny Hill times and what was socially acceptable then is not now. So some stupid advertising isn't allowed, that's hardly the death of our society.

God I seriously hope that this is a wind-up and it's a whoosh enticing post Easy.

Nowt wrong with it. If someone didn’t like it they didn’t buy the product rather than jumping on the socials and demanding retribution and a public apology

The 'Not for girls' marketing campaign was actually trying to exploit a comparatively untapped market. Rowntrees had done this more opaquely from the bar's inception by sticking it in the hand of a truck driver in the advert. Research at the time had showed that adult men bought less chocolate bars. The campaign was designed to break through this and market a chocolate bar specifically to men, not women or children. Presumably it considered that, as well as associating the product with blokes, it would spark a reverse psychology response from women who didn't want to be dictated to. The advert posted is a fairly obvious rip-off of a scene from Monty Python's 'Life of Brian'. For a 12 year old it could be a very interesting study, not only of how social attitudes have changed in the last couple of decades, but it also raises how advertising is always designed to manipulate and how it exploits popular culture and presses psychological buttons in order to do this.

Incidentally, I don't think that the 'Not For Girls' packaging was ever used on the raisin and biscuit Yorkie, and that's where the gold was. The plain Yorkie was interchangeable with the other chunk bars like Galaxy or Dairy Milk. The raisin and biscuit one is out on its own.
