Italian Restaurants in Brighton

My God, not this again

Sorry for not remembering every thread and/or post on here. To everybody else, thanks for your help.

Si Signore on sydney street get mine & many others votes

Si Signore by a distance.

Al Fresco isn't too shabby, but is bloody expensive.

Al Duomo is shite and a half. Awful place.

Only been there once and have to agree, really good service, atmosphere and food. Got me thinking of heading there this weekend.

On the recommendation of the first three quotes above I have been to Si Signore this evening and literally just got home afterwards and whilst I obviously can't comment on other peoples experiences i've got to say that the idea this is an 'Italian' restauarant is the biggest joke ever!!

For starters (not the anti-pasti!!) the guys running it (who were very nice it must be said!) are not Italian - did an earlier post mention the name 'Amir'? That raised alarm bells straight away!

Secondly, does a real italian do baked potatoes or prawn cocktail c/w rose-marie sauce? This is a gaff that does a few Italian dishes and thats about it.

Thirdly, the wine - we had a bottle of pinot grigio for £14- that as soon as the missus tasted it she said it was like piss - and she wasnt wrong!

The food - starters weren't bad. Main course - she had a pizza which was big and very good. I had seafood risotto which lacked the flavour of even a salty sea-dogs old wellie! FFS even the seafood in it (incl chopped crab-stick!!) didnt taste of seafood!!

All in all for two beers, two starters, two mains, a mixed salad and the pinot grigio this pre-cinema repast set me back £57- incl service!!

Of course when asked at the end of the meal if everything was ok we said ''yeah, fine'' !!

If you like a decent pizza fair enough but if you want proper italian food please dont bother!!

We went to Leonardo for lunch on Monday - two starters, two mains, two desserts, two cocktails and a bottle of prossecco set me back £70- for the pair of us - great food and great value!

THERE IS NO COMPETITION - LEONARDO FOR ME EVERY TIME!!

I've never had bad food or service at Leonardo ............and I'm told the dessert used to be of the highest order ha ha!

The bloke (not guys - there's only one of him) who runs it IS Italian (a Fiorentine), and isn't called Amir. The menu doesn't include baked potatoes. Thirdly, I'd have thought it impossible to get through £57 for two. I've never got through more than £30.

Sorry you had a shite meal, but I don't recognise the Si Signore you've been to.

the place up st james street on the right a few streets up as you head east, sorry cant remember name, small very authentic italian.

The one opposite the Saint James pub on Madeira Place? La Capannina I believe. Went there once, it was quite good if I recall correctly.

Deffo that one - perhaps I was wrong on the Amir bit!

But the board outside does offer baked potatoes - overall very disappoined and for the items I listed the bill did come to the £57-.

Marroccos, the chef is from Naples and the food is sublime and reasonable. It reminds me Italy, nothing fancy just good food and a decent atmosphere. You wont get much more authentic

Topolino Duo has to be up there. Good fish and Uncle Dick sacked Mark McGhee there.
Brighton/Hove is far better for Italian restaurants than most English cities.
Best British Italian I've visited was in a disused railway station at Melrose in Scotland.

Went to si signore last night, had some lovely garlic bread with cheese and chilis and a canelloni, was good but not a patch on brio in shoreham.

My favourite Italian restaurant used to be between Brunswick and Norfolk Square, on the opposite side of the road. I can't remember the name of it, but i always knew it as Geovanni's. The woman who owned it was a very tasty forty something italian woman called Geovanni who had three daughters in their twenties who served. Don't remember a whole lot about the food though. It closed about 15 years ago, so I may be a little late for this thread.
