My views on PR are well known (albeit I like the STV system as applied within constituencies).

I think the Germans tolerate and subsidise Italian and Greek profligacy, corruption and general tinpottery in the EU for the holiday destinations, cuisine and birds. Sorry - I mean the stability that the union gives to Europe.

Guilt - certainly as far as Greece (especially Crete) is concerned.

Quite. The Krauts know how to discuss things sensibly. Proportional representation is the best outworking of a truly democratic model. The argument that it doesn't work is directly proportional to those involved.

They say the UK is a Conservative country, yet under PR the right wing would not have formed a majority for decades. Thatcher would never have been a thing.

I wonder what would’ve happened to the UK then?

In the 60’s and 70’s we were laughed at as “the sick-man of Europe”. The strikes supremo of the planet. Shite; ministers, industrialists, products and political union bosses. In 1950 Italy for example was a country where one quarter were destitute. By 1979 they were mass exporters, the north wealthy.

I wonder how and when we would’ve finally beaten the incompetent triumvirate of unions/senior management/governments.

Italian establishment is institutionally corrupt. The Corruption Perceptions Index consistently ranks Italy as more corrupt than the likes of Rwanda, Oman and Saudi Arabia. It is debatable whether they’ve ever had a “clean” government.

If they tried, they’re under the Salerno to Reggio Calabria autostrada. Sited in a mafia hotbed, it took 50 years to build.

Oh yeah that must be it... Scandinavian & Benelux countries are notoriously unstable and chaotic.

Swanny, this is what happens when you come to the party late. You miss all the relevant stuff early on in the thread, but still expect others to discuss your points.

So - do we actually need governments?!

its questionable. Belgium has twice gone without government for extneded periods, last time over two years. didnt hear of collapse or chaos resulting. the problem is a lot of things cant be done because we need decisions made and no one in post to sign off, but then we've given those powers to ministers to start with. powers could have gone to civil service or local government instead. so yeah, we need some government but central system is not necessary most of the time.
