I have a real aversion to people getting caught doing things who the bring in addiction or other 'mitigating' reasons for their behaviour.

I know that may seem uncaring but unless there is some record of seeking help in advance it shouldnt be used as a way of reducing the punishment.

Without fail the "addiction" line is produced.

Shouldn't be a reason not to be punished.

Agreed, plus there are plenty of other sports/activities that he could have betted on which would not have jeopardised his career.

Yep. “I only realised there was a problem when I was about to be punished for something” isn’t a great look.

Given he's been shitehouse for Newcastle, culminating in the ignominy of being substituted in for Sean Longstaff for the last half hour of a dispiriting defeat on a cold, wet Wednesday night in Stoke Newcastle, will he ever play for them again...?

"So we know our player has broken a truckload of betting rules, including betting on his own games - basically match-fixing, and that he's been banned for 10 months...BUT... we've not actually seen the details of the ban in writing - so as famously we have zero morals or ethics, we are going to continue to play him anyway"

The video of him getting booked in injury time for absolutely nothing looks very dodge with this news

Surely any bookie would be able to pick up on any abnormal betting in such circumstances?
Some might say that’s exactly what Star Lizard provide to bookies 😉

Talk about being as thick as pigshit - these players have it drilled into them that they can't bet on (any) football. Never mind, because he's got an addiction he'll probably get a gentle telling off and a nice cup of tea

Tonali, Tony, Toney …. spot the connection.
