Some extraordinarily careless chat by Timmy on this thread, helpfully ID'd in the replies (as his actual posts have been sanitized after he begged and threatened our dear leader to bleach him to save political embarrassment). Enjoy - and remember, this is what many tory politicians evolved from. When I say evolved.....

You have waited 13 years to go and look so you can reply to the op….and it’s too misty
It has been on the task list for some time

Interesting.

I’d wrongly thought that the curvature of the earth prevented us seeing the cliffs at Fecamp 80 miles away.
After we left the EU the horizon was rebalanced in our favour.

To take that too seriously …

Seems like a dream that we were once as one with them. Freedom of movement, you could live anywhere with little red tape. Can’t believe we threw that away. I’d love Starmer to open a debate within a year or two. I really, really like cross party stuff, there was a lot of that 2010 to 2015, not just the coalition …. imagine if all the parties and MP’s bar Reform and right wing Tories got together on this one subject.

multiply your height in metres above the ground by 13, and take the square root of that. This is the distance to the horizon, in kilometres. That's 4.8km for a person of average height standing at sea level and looking out to sea

So, from the race course....altitude is 400 feet. That's about 122 metres.

So the horizon is 40 KM away......

Thing is......the nation isn't ready for it. Even staunch remainers are mostly resigned to the status quo. We may be able to swing some reasonable deals that soften the agony that is to come (and it has barely started yet - border in the Irish Sea, anyone?) but full blown rapprochement?

Plus.....if I were 'the EU' I'd be pretty cross with the UK. If they let us back in, even just a bit, all those hard won concessions (won by Thatcher mostly!) would be a pipe dream....

I saw some detailed polling on EU nations attitude to us rejoining. All positive. No surprise the largest against, but still a minority were France (and Spain). Their business folk want us back, a 68m market.

The best argument against I heard, from a Remain radio presenter/journalist, was at least give 10 years from 2016 to truly prove it didn’t work. I really hope inertia and apathy doesn’t win out for good. And the public wants what the public gets. But I don't get what this society wants.

I stand corrected.

Highest point is 200 meters.

So the horizon is 50 miles. Nope, it can't be the IOW. A mirage perhaps. Or clouds.

That photo was with a telephoto, but you can clearly see the downland of NE Isle of Wight from the Falmer Road in great light. The topography of hills, beyond the flatness of Selsey.

Fecamp is 80 miles from Brighton’s high points. Is that visible?

At 200 metres the limit is 50 miles so the isle of Wight sight must be a trick of the light. I can see France from the land above St Margaret's bay. Just. And it is cliffs on the other side.
