Was a bit underwhelmed with this at first, but bring Hayden in as a defensive midfielder could allow us more freedom with pushing someone like Propper into a more attacking role. Guess it all depends on the formation used.

What sort of Midfielder do we need ?

Defensive ? Perhaps this is Băluţă ?

Attacking ? Perhaps this is Alzate ?

Box2Box ? Hmmm. Probably.

Is Hayden really that B2B midfielder we are short of ?

He's an upgrade DM but can play a few positions. Makes sense.

Not glamorous but makes us stronger if we got him

Fair enough if we benefit from this - he’d be a good signing - but the player is presumably earning £1M+ a year; what is stopping his girlfriend moving to live with him in the North East?

We had EXACTLY the same issue with a certain Mr. G Murray when he first joined us.

Unsettled him a lot at the time.

Unless you're signing bloody N'Golo Kante, a defensive midfielder very rarely grabs the headlines and get the excitement levels up. I love that some people even mention his GOALS record as a reason why it's not a good signing :lolol:

Completely agree with you, although we all did get rather excited about Liam Bridcutt putting in 'Player of the Season' performances in that role.

An upgrade on Stephens? I'm not sure about that...

Key Stats from the PL Site (Stephens/Hayden)

Apps: 66/51
Passes per game: 47/24
Accurate Long Balls: 271/40
Tackles: 188/113
Tackle Success: 64%/58%
Interceptions: 109/63
Recoveries: 494/187
Duels Won: 294/257
Duels Lost: 316/240

The biggest benefit is his age but I'd say he's slightly worse, level with Stephens

Apparently he has a sick young child who needs regular hospital treatment in London. I think it's put a lot in perspective for him, as he he wants to move south to be closer to his family

Can't see us being linked with him anywhere? Quick search on twitter shows that Watford/Southampton/Bournemouth all being linked.

My thoughts, as per May.

Stephens
2017–18[31] Premier League 36 0
2018–19[32] Premier League 30 1

Hayden
2017–18 Premier League 26 1
2018–19 Premier League 25 1

Younger than Stephens, but plays less games per season (as is injured a lot), doesn't add anything to the goals column and would require a (hefty) transfer fee. Can't see the point.

If we want to sign a Newcastle midfielder (and I don't believe that we do), it should be Shelvey.

Stephens gets injured , who's your replacement DM ?

Not that matters as post below suggests he didn't want to come (£££)
