Where have you been? I’ve been getting smashed on this thread!

Hugo you are 100% correct. I am old enough to remember the team that finished higher in the old first division. Difficult to judge across eras, but I genuinely believe the current crop are just one player away from being top 10. I think we all know who I think that player is. Once that player is acquired, then this group will be correctly entitled the best ever. Until then... they are not..,

Not at all. We are all entitled to our opinions. Apology unnecessary, but thank you.

IMO (and after all, that’s all it can be) is that this is out best squad ever.

But, and this is the great thing (and also slightly scary), it’s not going to be the best squad we ever have (by that, I mean in the next 5-10 years). We are still improving, gradually, slowly, step-by-step. The current players are mainly young, and we are also frighteningly good at recruitment now. That doesn’t mean we won’t buy some players where it doesn’t work, but overall, it’s frigging impressive.

For example, the work carried out to secure the last signing (sorry, can’t remember his name, the young guy from S.A. who had been scouted by Man U too), just goes to show the amazing quality work being done by our club.

Imagine what the impact of this will be in 3-5 years time.

You can only compare generations by looking at their relative performance to their peers. So no, this team isn’t. But several games to go, let’s see

That is a point of view.

For me, comparison of the two sides man for man puts the current players significantly ahead in both individual footballing skills and quality of team play.

Different game back then - comparisons of any sort are not like for like. It's all about results (points). If/when we finish above 13th. we'll be able to say we've got a better squad.

Yes of course it is, if this is another backhanded swipe against Maupay, he really doesn’t deserve it

I’ve never understood this argument.

Are modern day computers not “better” than computers from the 1980s?

This is unquestionably the best squad of footballers our club has ever had.

It is clear cut because we were in relative doldrums across a period of time during which the overall standard of football improved massively and we are now in our best health ever.

Introduce a caveat about “relative to the standard of the time” and the current squad still win (this current group of players will obviously go on to be more successful than any other in our history) but it is a bit less clear cut as it involves some projection forward...

Mobile phones are better than they were in the 1980s. So what? And what have computers got to do with it? We don't play with a team of computers.

Once we got ourselves to a position where there were only 12 teams in the land better than us that season. We haven't done it again, not yet anyway.

When we achieve our highest ever league finish we will achieve our highest ever league finish.

In my opinion, we already have the best squad of footballers ever assembled by the Albion.

I was a massive Ward fan, in fact it was him that got me going to the Albion as a regular, that division three season was fantastic. However he was not that great as a Div 1 player

Ward scored 16 in his only full season in the top flight with us.
1 in 11 the following season though but he wanted out then.
