when my youngest was at Brunel Uni....143 people on her course...(she was the only white person not that that was aproblem as she had a great time) BUT the main problem on the Uni campus was between Asians and Affro Carribeans - they hated each other and the main bar kept having to be shut down to stop fights

My brother was the ents manager at Brunel, and he said the same thing, the 3 bars they had were always having to shut due to trouble, the police and council stopped certain nights being run as trouble always occurred.

To answer the Original Question - IMO the guy is not a racist.

IF I was to go and live in another Country, the first thing I would do would be to learn the language of that particular Country - in fact perhaps it should be a condition of entry?

I read the other day that according to the EU the UK will have a population of 77 million by 2060 - an increase of 25% on the current 61 million.

Just where is everybody going to live, go to School - what about hospitals etc? ...Surely there can be a sensible debate about immigration without being branded as a racist?

Being racist means believing people of one race are inherently superior than people of another race, by virtue of their race.

Simple as that.

There is no evidence in the article to suggest that he thinks that. He is not even saying English is a superior language than any other language. He is, however, seeking to deny service to people who he feels haven't made an effort to develop language skills in the majority language of a country. This runs counter to the idea of everyone having the right to the service and is possibly unprofessional, if it runs counter to something the Post Office believes in.

ive also seen problems between Sikh/Muslim/Hindu and between Caribeans and Africans. theres a lot of inter-racial tension that goes below the radar, and for the most part only surfaces where large groups of each come into contact with one another.


anyway, it certainly isnt racist just practical and Mr Kumarasiri is a credit to his adopted country.

If it's considered racist to expect people to learn the language of the country they choose to live in, then I must be. It's a mad definition.

If I went to live in Spain or France, I'd learn the language, I would expect to, and I would expect in any kind of formal or semi-formal situation dealing with authority that there would be a need to speak those languages.

If people live here and choose to live in a family unit and speak their native tongue there, that's totally up to them. But they need to learn English as well, to deal with all the situations life throws up.

I'm all for a period of adjustment and government interpreter help in the short term, whatever is reasonable - maybe two years - but after that it's sink or swim, and you pay the fines if you've ignored letters etc etc

To be fair about Spain I have a relative who has had a second home in Spain for about 10 years. He and the majority of the expats there can hardly speak a word of Spanish and it's fair to say that we British are not that good at learning other dialects.

Which is why I wouldn't dare try and live in a 'proper' Spanish area - for example Madrid unless I DID buck my ideas up with language learning.
