Is this ashes series the best sporting spectacle ever?

I'm having trouble remembering a better sporting spectacle than these 5 tests. Both teams have fought tooth and nail, gone punch for punch with one another, played it in the most sportingly fashion and given us all a series that will probably never be matched.

I can't think of any sporting event thats ever been as good as this before. Can anybody else?

Well played to both sides, both sets of commentators and both sets of fans

brilliant

Has to be the Ryder cup for me. The way the Europeans played was amazing and had me glued to the telly. Agree that the ashes has been very special but you can not really compare different sports. The Rugby World cup win and the Lios tour in South Africa a few years back all rate highly as well.

Anyone would think all I do is watch sport all day:shootself

Well I'm an old fart of 50 and in literally decades I can't remember such a wonderful series of cricket or indeed sporting series as this. Marvellous scenes at the Oval and great sportsmanship as well, to be quite frank it puts the overpaid primadonnas of professional football to shame.

Well done England and Australia for some marvellous cricket. :D

Like somebody said elsewhere on the thread: 'in cricketing terms'. Maybe.

But in sporting terms, off the top of me head:

McEnroe v Connors (tennis)
Taylor v Davis (snooker)
Benn v Eubank (boxing)
England v Australia (egg-chasing final)
Albion v Swindon (play-off semi, second leg, 119 minutes onwards)

Probably a dozen others if I gave it another five minutes

The Ashes was good. But it wasn't THAT good. I'd rather have it played with less dependence on bad light and a bit of rain. Somewhere sunny maybe. Then see who's worth the win.

It was still good tho

personally this Ashes series has beaten the World Cup run in '86 (I was only 9 then though), it certainly beats any other World Cup (football) that we've been involved in, dunno why but I just loved every moment of this series.

In my lifetime I have seen:

England win the World cup _ football
England win the world cup - rugby
Win the Ashes ( a few times in the 80's and now in the 2000's)
Steve Redgrave at the Olympics
Kelly Homes - ditto
Ben Ainsley - Sailing
Europe win the Ryder Cup ( but if it wasnt for the Europeans we wouldn't have done again)
Nigel mansell and Damon Hill win the F1
Foggy win the Motorcycling
Brigadier Gerrard and Mill Reef , Desert Orchid and Red Rum race
Brighton rise from the ashes of Goldstone , win championships, get to the FA Cup final and win at Anfield against arguably the best club team the world has seen.
I have taken all 10 wickets in a match and have a top score of 177 not out against Ferring.

I feel I have had a very full life sportswise, although for drama, the Worlds cup final Rugby was tremendous, but I can say I have never experienced emotion like that of watching this ashes series.

Are you trying to say that perhaps Australia are the better team?

Sporting spectacles maybe but i can't ever see myself punching the air, whooping with delight and having a "memorable" time if one American beats another at tennis,or any snooker player beats another. How can you put those things in front of Redgraves last Gold or any of the last 2 Ryder Cups? Or the womens curling at the Winter Olympics(i know, sounds daft but you had to be there).Or the last 5 mins at Cardiff?

I'd say that for this particular game in the series, then, yes, the Aussies would probably have won, given four uninterrupted days play. And England came pretty damn close to blowing a half-decent lead to win the earlier match by 2 runs. But good luck to the England team.

I'd say that was questionable. We had a six run lead after the first inning (albeit thanks to the cloud cover), but we also scored well over 300 again.

Firstly, if the Aussies had been abel to make 500, they would have taken AGES getting there. Don't forget, England bowled reasonably well without any luck whatsoever. But even with the first innings scores as they were, who's to say the Aussies would have surpassed the 330 odd they needed anyway?

What is a certainty is that ENGLAND were denied victory by the weather in the 3rd test...

Exactly, and dropped catches at Lords.2-1 is very flattering to the Aussies.
