Even as a remoaner, Lib Dem, lefty-loony snowflake etc, I find this utterly ridiculous. Ok, they were "alarmed and uncomfortable" at the lack of inclusion, but where does it end and how do these people get through the day without being upset by things at every turn?

I'm inclined to believe it's all faux-outrage, but then am I just too old and ignorant at 40 to accept the world is different now and people like myself and the train conductor need to move with the times?

Also, I can't stress enough how alarmed and uncomfortable I am at myself for sharing a story from The Sun. I hang my head in shame.

As an aside, I was just reminded of the air stewardess on the Aeroflot flight we took to Japan a couple of years ago. For the safety demonstration, she introduced herself - "Hello, my name is Svetlana. I am a person."

Not sure if she was making a point about personal pronouns or if it was just a language thing (I wasn't offended).

I have talked to my daughter at length on the subject and yes I'm definitely out of touch.
I find her generation's viewpoint very interesting.
They see the world as far more complex than man/woman/gay/straight, mainly because it is.

My hang-ups about it come from being out of touch, not because I am right and they are just trying to push a silly agenda.

Pathetic is probably the only word I can use on this forum for these two. If I wrote what I really thought about them mods would ban me !!

So much of the reaction to this story on this thread has an undercurrent of not really believing that non-binary is a real thing. “It’s woke liberal nonsense” “check between your legs”. My guess would be that a number of decades ago people probably thought the same about gay people “that they were choosing that lifestyle”. I think it’s generally accepted now that being gay is not a choice and all that happened in the past was gay people hid their true identities. I think the same is happening with non-binary, only now are people confident enough to be open about whereas in the past they hid their true identities.

For me, this sums it up perfectly, I'm 60 with adult kids whose views are different to mine and so I also realise things have changed. When I was a kid, long hair, new music, and a change in fashion scared a lot of the more 'traditional' generation and equally there are things that scare those equivalent groups of people today.

The Sun recognised this back in 1969 and have been selling this in order to 'outrage' and sell to their target audiences since 1969 (a very good business model, even if you don't agree with it). It's just that today you only have to click rather than hand over a few coppers. However, I believe some of those early headlines may be interpreted somewhat differently today, just as today's will be in a few years time It's called evolution.

I'm still quite taken aback as to what makes 'headlines' today but since I'm not the Sun's target audience, and I think there are other things, more important to me going on, pardon me if I'm not 'outraged'.

Good post - every ounce of my body wants to scream "oh shut up you raving idiots" to the complainers (especially as my announcements ALWAYS start "good morning Ladies and Gents" when I'm about to inform you that your train is delayed!) but I guess listening to what the younger generation are thinking and saying is no bad thing. I do feel though that a) if they are actually offended then they need to get a life b) a quiet email explaining the situation to LNER and what the alternatives might be a better way to do this than an attention seeking Tweet and c) I generally judge people by their intention and clearly there was no intent to offend here so they have gone about the complaining in completely the wrong way.
