My Dad insisted that we all do it and that is about the only phone number that I can still remember from those days. I cannot remember any of the ones I had once I moved out and have trouble remembering the landline one I have now! I have absolutely no idea what my mobile number is - when asked I have to look it up.
My dad still does it, he's 82. He also insisted that me and my brother answered the phone like that when we were young. Nowadays I ever so occasionally find myself answering the landline, and having to resist my brain telling me to say the old number from 30 odd years ago. Its still in their on autopilot.

Did it stop when we got phones showing who was calling?
As said before, only my kids, Amazon about an iphone purchase or my washing machine warranty people call now.

How many people know their partner’s mobile number, without looking it up?

i hate it when i give my number (eg made up) 07991 403 826 and they read it back 079 91 40 38 26 and i'm like wtf i dunno. who remembers their phone number in groups of 2 digits lol
I remembered mine like this 07991 40 38 26, only because someone asked me for my number when I got a new phone and I had it written down, they told me to learn the first 5 and the rest in groups of 2.
Definitely confuses me when someone reads it back to me 07991 403 826.
If I have to repeat a number back to someone I will say it exactly the same as they have read it out.

I used to have Brighton 334455 back in the day. Got loadsa drunks phoning for a taxi at unearthly hours. Can't say I miss that .
I've just switched to fibre so don't have a landline anymore but the number I did have was an old taxi one that I still recall from the days when being able to recall a small selection of cab numbers while ratarsed was a useful skill. Fortunately I never plugged a phone in. Also fortunately when I called to cancel my old ISP I had no useful documentation to hand but was able to do so because I had perfect recollection of a phone number I'd never used and never given to anyone since I got it a decade before.

I remember mine in 2s. Maybe as the Spanish always say them in 2s. I mean, they don't say five four, they say fifty four.
