Everyone who has viewed the Best Track You Have Heard Today thread will know I love Vini Reilly and his Durutti Column:

First Track on the 1980 debut album The Return of The Durutti Column, for music anoraks the producer was Martin Hannett of Buzzcocks, Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays fame.

Classic track from a classic album. Not sure if it's the best opener though as the whole album is superb!

Ridiculous!
You may not like them but millions did.
What do you have to offer?
It’s not ridiculous. I don’t like them. Plenty of other people didn’t as well. It’s a matter of taste. I’m not stopping anyone else liking Led Zeppelin.

if someone starts a thread “is this the best ever ………”, other people will disagree.

for an offering from me, the one after your post is a fairly good shot- Steely Dan - Do it Again.

the First Album I ever owned was the first Rolling Stones album, and this was the first track on it. My brother gave it to me for Christmas in 1964 when I was 11. I still love it.
not an enormous fan of the Rolling Stones now - classic “I prefer their earlier stuff”.

I have just made an offering . #76.
and if you don’t like it, that’s alright by me. Each to his own.

The Fatherland
As opening songs go, I can’t think of many better statements-of-intent than Gun’s n Roses Welcome to The Jungle.
