[Brighton] Is Portslade any fun?

I've never been able to quite locate where/what Portslade actually is. I know it exists somewhere but assumed it was a suburb of Brighton or Hove rather than an actual town.

But then I spent a year playing for Mile Oak and I still have no real idea where the **** that is either.

For the purpose of the OP I'm sure Portslade is fine. Wherever it is in the Brighton conurbation it's not going to be too far from the sea or the countryside or from the centre of Brighton.

My apologies to anyone who lives in/is from Portslade or Mile Oak and is offended by my ignorance of their locale. Or indeed whether they are a part of Brighton/Hove or separate entities.

Portslade is a great town, moody, atmospheric and exciting all at once. It has its own town hall and everything, and lively taverns designed to thrill, though I couldn’t find Mans Zelmerlow on any jukebox.

I used to go to Portslade a lot and there was quite a rowdy pub just by the station. I saw someone glassed in there once and made a run for it. I'm sure the police were called and I didn't want to be a hero - spineless I know but it was nobody I knew and didn't know the circumstances - so I don't judge Portslade by that one bad incident.

The shops were ok, people seemed friendly - well, friendlier than Haywards Heath. Too many middle-class wannabees here. Must admit Hove has always seemed very pleasant which is somewhere I wouldn't mind living.

Undoubtedly cheaper, but you wouldn't have half the experience IMO.

If I were you, I'd stay somewhere close to, or within this area:

Easy bus journey to Portslade (25 mins?), loads of decent local bars and only 10 mins walk into central Brighton.

The no 25 bus from Palmeira Sq gets you to the Amex on matchdays too.

For all its qualities, Portslade really isn't a great destination for a mature student looking to enjoy football, bars and women. My advice is to do it properly, or keep your powder dry until you can/want to.

If you only here for a few months don't be stuck out in the sticks at Portslade.


A different story if you wanted to bring over a family, but a single swansman will be a lot happier closer to the city centre.

I'm thinking about doing this thing - https://www.folkhogskola-england.se/ - studying on a "folk high school", three months in Sweden and three months (28 March to June something) in Portslade. While it says it is only 8 minutes by train from Brighton (and one hour from London but who wants to go there?), if I know myself correctly I'll primarly spend my days within walking distance, meaning the joys of Portslade would be important.

My primary hobbies include:
- Football
- Drinking
- Smoking all sorts of things (not massively important but a plus)
- Women
- Walking in nature

So basically I'm wondering if there is any local football team there? Any good pubs? Are people in Portslade the... smoking kind of people? Are the ladies nice? Is there some good parks and other recreational areas?

Can't you just write to Potter and ask him to put you up for a bit as his biggest fan?

As the self appointed Night Tsar of Portslade, it is very nice. I once saw a Seagull eat a pigeon outside the Victoria pub, so jot that one down.

In all seriousness, I've grown up in West Hove and Portslade, there is a certain amount of snobiness about it, but with such easy access to Brighton its great, and people talk it down too much. Theres some absolutely bizarre pubs (The Victoria, St Georges) but also some great ones (The Railway and The Foghorn). Theres Mile Oak FC to scratch the tender county league football itch, and some great walks around. Don't listen to the people who slag it off, I think its a perfectly fine place to live (taking into account I lived in Huddersfield for 4 years, this is a really nice place). As a 25 year old I always find something to do, and if you do get bored theres night buses from Brighton as the last portslade bound London Victoria departure is at 00.02.

Superstar DJ Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim can sometimes be seen doing his shopping in the Boundary Road/Station Road, Portslade Tesco's. I believe the last time I saw him in there he bought a packet of Golden Nuggets cerials.

Also, in order to get to the aforementioned nudist beach a few posts back you have to walk past his house.

One thing I will say Swansman, jumping from Lund and Göteborg to Portslade will be a massive culture shock! But, as others have said, it's very close to Brighton and I'm sure you'd spend most of your time there.

I beg to differ - London is fantastic. Try Greenwich, Camden, Walthamstow, Islington, Putney, Wandsworth (to name a few of the places either I or our daughters have lived in). Also, I very much like Deptford, Hackney, Tufnell Park....the list goes on. So many great neighbourhoods in London. Obviously pricier than most parts of the UK - but you don't HAVE to live in South Ken.

I agree you don’t have to live in south Ken , but Greenwich , Hackney for example both have serious issues with gangs going around attacking each other with knives . Not really the environment I would want to live in . Walthamstow also is quite rough judging on the met police stats . What I don’t get is these places are not cheap to live in , there are far safer less expensive areas in London to live in albeit a bit further out .
