He is not the commentator though is he, he is there to give a bit of opinion. First time I've listened to commentary for years but I thought he did a good job. Unfortunately though I thought he went on way too long and one sided about the penalty, and after the second goal I turned off as he was still banging on about it.

Can I just state that the only times I actually do the co-commentary for the BBC is on the occasions when there are no ex-players available to do it. I am the last choice basically! I would prefer the BBC to recruit ex-players, largely because I don't actually like being put in a position where you may have to be critical of players who are effectively work colleagues. Nonetheless, when the BBC don't have the funds to pay for an expert summariser, I don't mind helping Hawesy out (although I get the feeling BBC SCR management would be happy for him to commentate alone - which is a near-impossible task) and try and give Albion fans listening a bit of extra insight into the game.

With regard to Tuesday's game, I saw the penalty incident in real time from a very close vantage point and have seen it several times (from two different angles and from a more objective stance) and stick by my original shout that it was NOT a penalty. Porter runs in front of Hawkins and goes to ground - there is NO push. The linesman gave the kick, but the referee was NOT going to give it (after the game he admitted he didn't think it was a penalty, but had to back his linesman's decision). For me it was the worst penalty decision in 25 years plus of supporting Albion.

Immediatly prior to the penalty Matt Richards was fouled under the linesman's nose, he chose not to make a decision - even though he was better placed than the referee. In my opinion the linesman reacted to the pressure from a partisan crowd behind him.

For me it was a major turning point. Yes, at the time, Albion were under a bit of intense pressure (you have to expect that at a place like Hartlepool, where they don't often lose home games) but the team were coping in much the same way we did at Peterborough - and I felt without the intervention of the linesman we would have seen the job through. That goal took the wind out of our sails, and moments later they got the second and that left us out the Cup.

Now had we won that 1-0 the whole mood would be very different - not to mention the club's balance sheet - and with that in mind, the point I was making is that the Albion players got slaughtered for their performance on Saturday at Carlisle, but a similar inept display from both linesman passes without major comment. In fact Colin Hawkins seems to have had more stick!

Total respect to the 116 who made the trip BTW! Especially if they went on Saturday too, because that was one beast of a week! Do we know who got home earliest? I walked in at 4.15am!

Not that you sound offended, but I wasn't slagging you off Paul, just a tad surprised by the 'restored pride' comment.

Generally, you do a bloody good job considering!

Not offended in the slightest. Too long in the tooth for all that...

I felt they did restore some pride - perhaps it wasn't quite as good viewing from the away end, but you do get a different perspective from the side. I think you have to take into account the home side and their excellent record. We were the better side in the first half (just), Hartlepool dominated for a good half hour of the second, before we came strong in the last 15 minutes. The Setanta reporter (entirely independent) felt there was nothing between the sides.

How bout if you get an NSC er to co commentate that would be superb radio ......................of course you would have to find one or two who can speak with words in a sentence..... so that may narrow it down:lol:

I'd rather listen to someone a bit biased and a bit passionate about The Albion. We all complain about BBC's obsession with neutrality and it's good to hear someone SLAUGHTERING the officials from the perspective of a FAN!

He was great at Peterborough as well when the ref was 'subbed because he's rubbish' or words to that effect.

That counts you out for a start.

I would bloody LOVE to co-commentate. I suspect it's not quite as easy as some of them make it though!

I still didnt think it was pride restored to the shirt, they were on top for the first 20 minutes, we scored against the run of play, and ended the 1st half OK

The second half was a shambles, we didnt want to get further away than 25yards from our own goal. 2 banks of 4 sat on the edge of our area, inviting them to attack us and attack us, time and time again.

It was only a matter of time until they scored, we were NEVER going to keep a clean sheet after the back of Carlisle performance.

Again its only my point of view. We did OK, for the second half of the 1st half, but thats it.

YEs the penalty may not have been given, and Murrays goal could have been given, but I dont think we were good enough to win the game, and the performance was pretty bad.

It was summed up by a distinct lack of round of applause at the final whistle
