[Albion] Is Lewis Dunk Brighton's greatest ever player ?

Before your OP, I was thinking about Lewis the other day.
In years to come after he retires I think he’ll be universally appreciated by fans as an Albion God. Based on the sheer number of appearances at the near highest level, one club, from the city itself, the captain who expertly marshalled the defence.
For some it will take his retirement to recognise that.
In any other turbulent era pre-Bloom, Lewis would’ve had to fulfil his dreams elsewhere. Thankfully for us he didn’t need to.

I never ever saw Lawro head the ball whilst laying on the floor back to the keeper,I didn't see him run 50 yards with the ball go past 4 defenders and smash it in the net on the rebound,I certainly never saw him play in goal and keep a clean sheet,of course I've never seen Dunk with a Mullet so being the greatest at something has many points to take into consideration,if I was building a all time team Dunk would be first on the list so I guess for me he is.

Our greatest ever player by some distance and I don't need to have seen every player since 1901. He's a local boy, a fantastically gifted player that plays his heart out week in week out. He's grown with the club and has now captained us to our highest position ever in the Premier League. Legend of all Allbion Legends.

As with many things, its how you interpret the question. Greatest or most talented.? two very different things. Are we talking about the impact he has had on the club over a number of years, both on and off the field. His commitment to the club, his stated desire to remain here for all his career.
Has there been another player who has given his all time and again on the pitch, how often has any one questioned hos work ethic on the pitch, even in his out of form periods
There have been more talented players(but not many) but I cant think of one in all the time I have been supporting the Albion (45 plus years) who comes close to the list above.
The title of "greatest ever " is impossible to give as there are so many different things to consider - but he is certainly in the group of great Brighton players and our club would be immeasurably poorer without him

Reading this thread makes me think there are still some who underrate quite how good he is.
A different England manager would mean 20-30 England caps by now for the boy. He's that good.
I've made a point of watching John Stones and Harry Maguire closely over the last season or so, whenever I catch one of their games on the telly, because I really wanted to understand why LD is so often overlooked and these 2 are shoo ins every time.
I haven't seen anything to convince me either are better overall CBs than LD.

He is one of the greatest without a shadow of a doubt, the greatest not so sure.
His commitment and passion is unquestionable, every game he gives a 100%, does he makes mistake yes, does he make incredible clearance and deliver pin point accurate cross field passes, pop up for a thundering header in to the roof of the net from a corner, all yes.
You simply cannot wish for anymore from a player.
He is undeniably in the top 3.
I do wonder what type of manager he would make, and could the legend grow when he hangs his boots up.
Does anyone see him moving into a coaching role at the Albion and possibly further up the chain ?

Undoubtedly. You can't perform at that consistency and quality, at such a high level, for so long, potentially be a one club player, captained us to our most successful season ever, and be a local lad, and not be first on the list of club legends .
That's what 'greatest' means to me. The biggest legend at our club. There's technically better players in the team right now. There are players who have achieved more in the past, or who will go on to achieve greatness in the future, but they will do it with other clubs. There are players who we built teams around in the past, like Bobby, or who played more games like Gary Hart, or who were great captains like Horton, or became one of the greatest players of their generation, like Lawro, but the all round longevity, talent, leadership, local connection, likeability, dedication and success points to one man alone.

The "greatest" is always so difficult. Who is England's greatest player? I can come up with three from one match: Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst. How can you pick the greatest from those three alone? Impossible in my eyes.
The Wardy v Bobby argument will run long after most of us on here are gone. You will never get a unanimous answer.
In terms of longevity, commitment to the club then yes, he probably is the greatest during my years. Is he the greatest footballer to ever wear a BHAFC shirt? I'm not so convinced.

If Dunky was playing for either of the Manchester clubs that Stones and Maguire represent, then he would undoubtably have earned a multitude of caps by now.
As ever, players from clubs like little old Brighton are so often overlooked. The current England manager having spent so long playing for that mob up the A23 doesn't help any either.

Greatest is a word with multiple meanings. Agree with you, as a servant to the club in many aspects, coming through the youth ranks, up through the leagues, captain through the club's longest and most successful spell in the top flight - he's got to be up there on many of the metrics.
It's flown under the radar, but Lewis Dunk's pass to Mitoma that caused the red card (and arguably sealed the win) was absolutely top drawer.
Two things:
1) If that had been Slippy Gerrard a decade ago, the pundits would have creamed themselves over that.
2) Can you imagine useless slab head doing that for England at the WC?

I blame Dunk for both Wolves goals so not a good time to ask (he was the covering defender for the first goal and inexplicably stopped sprinting momentarily as the Wolf bared down on Sanchez meaning that his sliding block cam in too late). Come back next week and it will be a ‘yes’!

In my lifetime Peter Ward remains the greatest I've seen,he would slot seamlessly into today's team in his prime.
Dunk has to be right up there with Brighton and Hove Albion greatest players purely on the amount of games he's played in the top flight.
I think Vicente gave my favourite performance ever from a Brighton player v Pompey, imagine what he must have been like to watch in his prime, awesome player.
Of our current squad the player I think that could be our next superstar in waiting is Sarmiento, hopefully he can stay fit long enough to show how good I think he actually is.
