I'm trying to think of a finer live album but all my other favourites don't even come close:

Smiths - Rank
Depeche Mode - 101
Nick Cave at the Albert Hall
Beach Boys live in London
Elvis in the 69 vegas comeback tour

We haven't had a Friday music debate for ages. What do you peeps think is the best live album?

Van Morrison Too Late To Stop Now
The Band The Last Waltz
Dire Straits Alchemy ( expects hoots of derision but still reckon it's one of the best live albums ever)
Neil Young Live Rust

I also have a big soft spot for The Stranglers Live X-Cert, if nothing else for the way it begins with Huge Cornball just 'AAARGH AAARGH AAARGH AAARGH' into the mike before it explodes into 'Grip'.

Still breaks my heart that The Stranglers were so shit live every time I actually saw them.

And on another completely different note, to pre-empt what is to come, yes Live and Dangerous is a great album, but its "Live" credentials are dubious.

Although it now sounds dated, I still listen now to .....

Simple Minds, Live in the City of Light.

That for me is a bit spesh!

Both? Aren't you forgetting the Swedish one, På Österåker, recorded at Stockholm's Österåker Prison? Worth it just to hear him sing the amended opening line of San Quentin, "Österåker, you've been living hell to me". Brilliant!
Check it out on Spotify.

That is a quality album, haven't heard that since it came out. Years later, I went out with a Parisian girl who claimed to have BEEN there on one of the nights they recorded it.

Sinatra and Count Basie at the Sands, 1966. With Quincy Jones as musical director, no less. Dreadful rat pack jokes and very swinging groovy music.

The Who Live at Leeds is the best, of course.
Rank by The Smiths is not anywhere near as good as it could've been- there are 'semi-official'(?) live Smiths concerts out there which are far superior, IMHO.
'Live and Dangerous' by Thin Lizzy is always up there in the polls- but never heard it, anyone?
'Folsom' is great as is his appearance at Glastonbury, which I have- the crowds impromptu 'whoo-whoo' during "Let the Train Blow the Whistle", which wasn't released at this point is fantastic, and even made Johnny chuckle.
And there are great Prince live albums out there- if only some had been released officially (esp. Parade and Lovesexy tours!)
