I use the SSRS (Safer Seas And Rivers Service) app, which monitors specific locations. For example, rn it's showing Kemptown, Central Brighton and Hove as OK (green tick) but Shoreham as a no-no (red cross). Easy to interpret but idk what data they use and how reliable it is, though it hasn't failed me yet.

Brighton beach usually falls from excellent to good after a long dry spell followed by heavy rain, this is near allways because the accumulated dust and dirt from the beach is washed into the sea

All sussex householders are paying a collective small fortune to line the pockets of senior southern water execs, while they fail to provide the service they are obligated to, and load up the company with more and more debt to pay themselves bonuses.

Brighton used to have a blue flag FFS, now you cant get in the water without risking dysentery.

James O’Brien, no friend these days of privatisation, last week reminded listeners that in the 80’s the UK had the filthiest beaches and rivers in the EEC …. when our water companies were state owned. Welsh callers now were furious with the sewage and pollution in their waters … their water company is not for profit!

Having said that, imho our water and rail industries should by 100% state owned. For national interest and pragmatic reasons.

We've had loads of sun down here - just been unusually mixed. Bored of folk moaning about the summer ffs.

In answer to the question: swam loads this summer - 4 times a week or so. It's absolutely fine.

Evidence over the past 40 years suggests that state ownership of rail and water should (!) produce better results for consumers.
