My daughter spoke to me for the first time in eight years last week, life is better. It might be another eight years before she speaks to me again but it's a step in the right direction.

I suppose it's both.

On the one hand it's a beautiful day, I've got a lovely family, Brighton are in the Prem, we don't live in the third world or the stone age etc etc.

On the other hand, you have to be incredibly ignorant of current affairs not to worry that .....

We're ruining our planet
There are more people with extreme views and this is impacting world politics
Global financial inequality and global warming are likely to create disruption on a level not seen since WWII
The UK is becoming a worse place to live, (on probably every metric)

I could list probably 100s of things which are going south if I had the time. Sorry, can't be happy clappy about life in 2019

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
Where's the humour? :lolol:
You ought to do some kind of daily joke thread and less of the Countryfile stuff..

I can't disagree with any of that. Watch this space!

Not surprising really. Who wants to talk to an accountancy DULLARD?

Switch off your social and mainstream media feeds inc NSC. Head out into the natural world. Plan (properly) something you’d like to achieve and set goals. Talk to friends and family, preferably face to face. Focus on what you can control. :) And prepare for Albion to get beaten by Palace / stack fridge with alcohol to numb pain before during and afterwards

...and with that sage advice so many of you are giving the thumbs up, I think it's time to practice what I preach and head on out into that big wide world! Ta ta :)

Don’t follow the news religiously, turn it off.

The happiest people are fully aware of what’s going on in World, but don’t watch/listen/read the non stop conveyor belt of negativity. There’s far more to life than politics, crime in London, etc. 24 hour TV news has made it much worse, with Sky and BBC in a ratings battle, so homing in on every ‘bad news story’ as if it’s important breaking news.

Indeed, back to the good old days where the 6 o' clock news was the daily update on all things important. At 6.30, the news ended for another day. _40296329_whitmore300.jpg

I can sell you a nice house in rural Spain if that would help?

I keep trying to inject some humour into NSC, but that seems to get overruled by arguing, tribalism and school playground pettiness.

Some posters like Jack Straw seem to be comedyphobic as he clearly in incapable of laughter.
When are you going to start?

If you are unable to absorb real world stories without it getting you down, you need to stay a big step back and work instead to become a more content person inside. Only once you’ve achieved that, can you deal with the ups and downs of the world, and perhaps make a tangible difference yourself to one or two of the things that concern you.

Otherwise you’re not truly living your precious life.

I agree that, domestically, things - by UK standards - are bleak.

It would be great to see The Independent Group become a political party and be the catalyst for some change in British politics. It's not just the government that is poor but the leadership of the opposition, First Past The Post, the HoC itself, voter apathy, general ignorance in society of key issues.

Politics is dysfunctional, no one trusts anybody, everyone is suspicious, there's too many people vying for a position of power. Parties are not working together for the long-term common good of the country. There's nothing to inspire, no creativity in policy.

Above all else, politics has become incredibly BORING with complete dullards in key Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet positions. Chris Grayling and Dianne Abbott are positively dangerous, completely inept. Indeed, UK politics is like a grotesque, farcical tragi-comedy.

Football aside, I struggle to see anything remotely positive that's happening in the UK at the moment; education, transport, crime, the list goes on and on on...

And I've not even mentioned the 'B' word...

Potholed roads, uneven cracked pavements that are a mosaic of tarmac and slabs, overcrowded trains, stagnant wages for many over the last 10 years, social cohesion breaking down, homelessness, Food Banks, Denial from government of the results of austerity, that £350m a week has got a lot to do.

There is always people around you, who have far worse things to deal with.
It's just that people don't always talk about their issues and some do.
It's only shit if you let it be shit.
Without getting into it, you have to get on with things IMO

I should coco, bloomin' love the stuff!

I used to do something very weird with Evaporative milk, we used to give some to the cat sometimes and I though (as a 5 yr old) that it looked fun to pretend to be a cat and put some Evaporative milk (couldn't be normal milk) in a saucer, then get on my hands and knees and lick it up like a cat!
For some reason it tasted nicer than drinking it normally.

Joking aside. This is the sort of thing that matters. I've just made an appointment with a counsellor who helped us through some really bad times and who we really need to talk to again to get our life back on track after three years of non self inflicted hell. Don't mind admitting that I've just cried my eyes out when she replied that she's happy to help us.

Steps in the right direction FTW.
