Is Falmer now going to have a capacity of 30k?

The club has permission for 22,500 seats. If they had origionally had plans for a 30k seater, Falmer probably would never have been approved. Besides 30k is far too big for our needs. Yes, if you look at the stadium it has clearly been designed to hold bigger capacities in the future, the biggest obstacle was getting the bloody thing built.

yes but getting the capacity increased wont be an obstacle when the club have already announced the ground is capable of reaching a higher capacity. Surely its more of a decision for the club make. It really wont surprise me as it wont mean dismantling anything.

It would need a TMP.
We would have to demonstrate we could get the number aware from the stadium within a suitable time. we have only demonstrated we can currently do this for 22,500.

When I went to the 1901 presentation at Falmer they said that the capacity can be increased, the footings will actually be in place in the corners so if necessary this expansion could take place during the season. However, as others have said, this won’t happen unless we can prove the need for extra seats.

The guy at the presentation, and MP, both pointe dout that the structure is designed to take an extra tier on the East Stand, increasing the capacity to over 30K. Regarding filling in the corners I seem to remember them saying that would not happen.

No, no NO.

The clubs 22500 capacity takes into effect local transport infrastructure and services. The current set up is deemed capable of handling this figure. An increase in capacity would have to be backed up by suitable improvemnts in transport links (i.e TRAINS, station improvements etc etc). The club has not publically announced (as far as im aware) that the ground is capable of holding 30k+. Even thought it is distinctly obvious that there is room for expansion, the club has permission for 22500 at this moment in time. Any future additional seating WILL need planning permission, as you are adding to the figure that was initially agreed to.

An extra tier in the east stand would have to hold more than 8,000/9000 seats to bring it to 30k+

I think you will find, that the corners have been left like they are for a reason...

I'd be inclined to wait - at least until we are certain that Norman Baker won't be Secretary of State for the Environment.

Yeah they said to us that it's designed to take an extra tier on the East, they definately told us that the corners could be filled too though, have to wait and see.

And that Nigel Farage won't be providing the extra transport.

We have only been given planning permission for 22,500. The stadium was re-designed (slightly) back in Dec 2008 so that we could build a 22,500 seater which could then be expanded if required in the future

Stadium capacity increase will be as much up to us as fans as the club. Lets face it, if we park our cars all over the place, ignoring the park and ride, and don't follow the travel plan we will never see a capacity increase.

But that's assuming it's his decision to make which would only be the case if the application to increase capacity went to yet another public inquiry wouldn't it?

Given that it appears that the club appear to have been shrewd enough to choose a design that allows for significant increase in capacity under the existing roof and the principal argument against any development in an around an AONB/National Park is likely to be the visual impact I'm not sure a public inquiry would necessarily happen.

The main planning focus would be centred around the practicalities of transporting x thousand additional fans to and from the stadium I'd imagine.

But then the decision on whether to hold a public inquiry in the first place is presumably the Secretary of State for the Environment's I suppose he might choose to have one regardless.

The stadium is being built by Buckingham who also built MK Dons and I am told by an MK Dons supporter that if England gets the 2018 World Cup they have been told their stadium will be one that will be used and the extra seats will be added. At the moment the top tier is just a concrete block but apparently when the seats are put in that will take the capacity to over 50,000. So probably the design for our stadium will incorporate a similar type increase if ever needed, perhaps not 50k.

That isn't technically correct - Stadium:MK's lower tier is 22,000 seats. The current upper tier will take it to 32,000 when seats are added. If we get the world cup, a third tier will be added, which will take it to about 50,000.

This is interesting...There's a thread in the Ask the Falmer PRoject Team asking what UEFA Category the Stadium would be and the Answer was "Elite".

Oddly though, one of the conditions for an UEFA "Elite" stadium is that it has a minimum capacity of 30,000

I'm no builder but wouldn't expansion of the East stand require a larger arch to match the one on the West stand (or are they the same size?) and thus some major structural work?
