Is Falmer just not big enough for us?

El Presidente in occasional overly negative post to try and make a point shocker...
Everyweek you dis our potential, you will be another one with egg on your face.

You expecting us to get 10k next season or something????
Maybe El Pres has simply noticed the DOZENS of times over the years that Goring Gull has mentioned Chesterfield in his posts.

All this talk of 19-20,000 gates regularly is absolute tosh.
We have had our traditional fanbase steadily eroded away over the years and it will take a similar time to re-establish it. If we average 13-15,000 it will be a major achievement.

I expect a full house for the opening game at Falmer but unless we dominate whatever league we're in it will tail off to the above figure. We have lost a lot of our fan base and it's not likely to come flocking back.

huddersfield had lost their fan base for alot longer than us but still managed 17,000 18,000 for a few seasons on the back of a new stadium alone, found our fan base pretty quick for the play off final, plenty of people who have never been to goldstone or withdean are looking forward to going to the ac stadium,i think we will be alright if they price the s/t well.going from 2 s/t to 8s/t for falmer within our family:thumbsup:

Ahh. Wasn't aware of Goring Gull's history.

Doesn't change the fact El Pres is sometimes prone to similarly negative posts.

What's negative?

I just think that given we have not had a 20,000+ average crowd since 1979/80, and a 10,000+ average crowd since 1982/3, we seem to be getting a bit ahead of ourselves, especially given that we can't even get 8,000 into Withdean at present.

For me Falmer 'is just not big enough' because 22.5k is not a statement of intent. I'm probably in the minority here, but I'd rather have a capacity that is 'a statement of intent' (which in my view is 28k absolute minimum if you want to be taken seriously as a Premiership wannabee club) and with that 28k I'd happily accept the potential thousands of empty seats that might go with it rather than settle for a more full-looking-on-match-days 22.5k. Obviously with Falmer's capacity for expansion, these are moot points, but I'm sure that if I was a player or manager having to choose between joining several different clubs, the capacity of the stadia would definately come into my decision making.

I think the numbers most players are interested in are those related to their wages, not ground capacity

I don't doubt his wage packet was at the fore, but Cantona apparently chose Old Truffle because he considered it a big enough stage on which to showcase his talent.

Fair comment, but Sir Eric is not representative of the average player. I also suspect there is not a lot of difference in the mind of a player between a half empty 28,000 seater stadium and a half empty 22,500 seater one. There is a lot of difference between Falmer and OT though.
