Is Barnes right, or is HE a racist??

Does Barnes deserve to be taken seriously regarding his claim that there is discrimination against black managers now?
Do chairmen really give a toss?
Personally, I think Barnes is being racist against white chairmen!

From Soccernet;

"Former England international John Barnes believes there is sub-conscious racism in British football which sees black managers treated unfairly.

Paul Ince takes Macclesfield to Chelsea in the FA Cup at the weekend, but he is one of only two non-white managers in the Football League along with Keith Alexander at Peterborough.

Barnes, who had an unsuccessful brief spell in charge of Celtic seven years ago, does not see football as a level playing field for black coaches and managers.

The Liverpool legend told PA Sport: 'From an athletic point of view there will be black people because athletically we are equal, from a managerial perspective it's more to do with the intellectual aspect of it and I don't think we are regarded as intellectually equal.'

He added: 'If you want to talk about racism, I think it is a sub-conscious racism.

'I don't think anyone goes out to say `I don't like black people and they're not going to be a manager'.

'It's not that he won't give him a job because he's black, it's because he's not up to the job. Why is he not up for the job? Because he's black.

'Sub-consciously he would think `I don't want him because he's not up for the job'.'

The only black top-flight managers have been Dutchman Ruud Gullit and Frenchman Jean Tigana, and the Professional Footballers' Association and League Managers' Association have been looking at getting more non-white coaches qualified for coaching and management.

'Of course it's an issue. The only two non-white managers in the Premier League have been French and Dutch, so although they are black they were a bit exotic - not English with an English accent,' added Barnes, who was recently invited by sponsors Vauxhall VXR to coach amateur side Team VXR in London for a day as the club bid to become semi-professional."

I do not think Barnes is being racist but I think his reasoning is wrong. Most managers are in their late forties or fifties, not enough time has passed yet since the mass influx of black players into the English league.

In 10-15 years the percentage of black managers will be significantly higher as there will be an increase of black players retiring from the game.

I don't know what your definition of racist is NMH but making comments highlighting what he believes to be discrimination against black managers without being derogatory to caucasians isn't mine, or most peoples I would imagine. Shame you have reduced what could have been an interesting debate on the issues Barnes has raised by that bit of blatant stupidity.

Purely a case of John Barnes using his colour as a reason for not getting another manager's job as opposed too the real reason, He was shit at it! :nono:

Barnes really makes me f***ing sick.

Always played the race card when he was booed for England and claimed it was because he was black. It was quite clearly because he was such a lazy player for England.

Cunningham, Regis, Anderson, Walker et al were never booed because they showed commitment when pulling on an England top.

He's doing the same now. Masking being a crap manager and crappier pundit by spouting the usual bollocks.

Sorry Buzzer but that's not true. John Barnes didn't imagine getting racist abuse when he played for England, it happened. Not from most people maybe but anyone who went to watch England in those days will tell you there was a hardcore of openly racist nutters at every game. Barnes also had bananas thrown at him on the pitch when he went to play for Liverpool. So I don't think he can be accused of simply playing the race card - he's experienced some pretty horrendous racism in his football career.

Having said that - as others have noted, he was an abysmal manager.

........... including a well-known incident on a plane on the South American tour in which he scored his most famous goal.

And being crap does not normally stop a manager getting a job.

I wonder how many black players approaching retirement actually take their coaching badges? Just maybe they don't want to be managers, I can't ever recall us turning black managers down in favour of white ones. If they don't apply they won't get the job!

Sounds to me he is still bitter about the fact he was such an awful manager.

He was dropped in at the deep end. For Dagleish - it worked - although he had the remains of the Anfield Boot Room. He needed a lower profile to hone his management skills.

Or indeed, some management skills in the first place.

If the "racism" he believes is there is "subconcious" then it is unlikely that it is demonstrable, or provable.

Therfore it is about as valid as me saying "I believe that the people of Botswana have got it in for me because none of them have ever offered me a job or spoken well of me"

Gobshite.
