Is 86 points enough for automatic promotion?

Looking back at the previous tables on average the top 2 teams have ended the season winning between 24 and 27 games, with the top 2 usually separated by 1 win. So we need to keep pace with the team with the highest number of wins, which at the moment is Hull with 18 followed by Boro on 17. We currently have 15 so we are behind by 3 wins and makes tomorrow's game even more important that we don't lose (a draw would not be a bad result).

I would guess we need to win at least 10 of our remaining 16 games and scrape a few draws to make it into the top 2, but with only 7 home games and 9 away games that could be a BIG ask!

I've always been a believer that winning 25 games will get you promoted and winning 20 would get you a playoff spot

I'll stick by that

Already been a thread. I have already posted this as people said we needed 12 wins. Projection of hull and boro points means we need 91 to get second.

This is the same Boro who haven't won in five games, yeah?

No. The question is an easy one. How many points are required to finish second historically. The answer is simple and there isn't more than one way to look at it.
Either that, or you're mistaken :)

There are a lot of us who are sure you are wrong, so at least try and consider the possibility we're right, because at the moment you're literally only seeing things from your point of view.

You're all over complicating a very simple question. We don't want to beat the team in second we want to BE the team in second.
We could finish second, but we can't simply make it so that the team who would have finished 2nd (were it not for us) doesn't exist, and doesn't get their wins. Just try and apply your logic to Middlesbrough last year. They wanted to BE the team in second. How could they do that? According to you they had to beat 3rd placed Norwich by 1 point, and that's it. But you know it wouldn't have worked.

Getting back to the main question...

At this stage last season, the top 6 had a very similar number of points as they do this year, and the top 4 finished with 90, 89, 86 and 85. I guess it could be similar. 10 wins, possibly 9.

Your point of view is giving teams more points than they ended up with. I hate repeating myself but the nub of the question remains how many points did the team in second need to finish second? The fact a few of you don't get this doesn't make me wrong.
