Irish Fans tonight

I'm not moaning about their team we all know it's not good enough. I'm moaning about the love in from the commentators (and now on this board) about how great the Irish support is/was.

It's the same with the Scots, where ever they go you have people banging on about how great the tartan army is and how it's taken over the city they are playing in.

Anyone who's been to an international game involving Ireland or Scotland will tell you their fans are a drunken disgrace to their respective nations. They behave in a way that is vilified by the press on a weekly basis when reporting on binge drinking or broken Britain. It would seem that the same behaviour is tolerated if you are wearing a tartan skirt or a silly top hat at a game of football.

Maybe the main element for their toleration is that the drunken behaviour does not generally lead to belligerence and violence . No one is praising the Russian and Polish "Ultras"

Arthur. Having been on tour with Scots and Irish abroad I can assure you there is nothing but praise and locals take to them wherever they go. They are having a great time enjoying themselves despite the fact that their teams are not that good. The vast majority here agree that the support was amazing and the sound made was the best I have heard from the championships. So, tonight England will be out supported 4 to 1 by the Swedes as we could not be arsed to travel. I hope we hear the band and I hope we hear English voices loud and clear but seriously doubt that!

I think it is you that is missing points here. Fook off and depress yourself elsewhere!

Personally I think you're completely wrong. As has been said before, no-one really minds pissed up football supporters, as long as it doesn't lead to agrression and violence. And this is really not the monopoly of Ireland or Scotland either. The Scandinavians tend to get absolutely bollocksed on tour, especially the Danish.

It's funny the Scots are mentioned as an example of "there for the sing song". Anyone remember 1978 and all those angry sweaties after games against Iran and Peru? It wasn't all happy clappy sing song and there for the craic, I can tell you. Stumpy Tim is right - it is easier to take on this que sera sera attitude when your team is f***ing shit, less so when there is even a modicum of expectation.

What I find most annoying personally is that our commentators are always trying to be positive and complimentary about Ireland.
If we were to get a 4-0 spanking the ones over on RTE will all be chuckling to each other over it in the studios.

Having seen them both first hand I can't agree with anything you've said. 2002 I flew to Japan on a plane full of Paddies and they were a f***ing nuisance from the moment they got on the plane until I finally lost them after immigration.

How can I be missing the point I'm making!?!?

Fair point, although I disagree about people minding about pissed up football fans. I'm sure the only people who are delighted about having these nations in their towns and cities are the hoteliers and the bar owners.

Why craic though? Rather than crack? Grinds my gears as Peter Griffin might say...

Living in the real world.
Just got back from Ireland and watched Ireland v Croatia in a bar in old leighlin. The atmosphere was amazing and the people ever so friendly. We could learn a few lessons off the Irish.

He wasn't referring to the fans, he was referring to the players needing to give the fans more than just a sing song. I don't think it was a criticism of the fans at all.

ah ok, I only read what I quoted i my original post. Sounded like he was having a pop at the fans from that. And nothing about Roy Keane would surprise me :)

I couldn't give a toss about the Irish and their fans; I'm glad they got a bloody thrashing. I don't understand why any Englishman would have a love affair over the Irish; My father in 2002 was all the Irish, his view was: "We support them and they support us" - since when do the Irish care about us? They'll piss themselves laughing if we get beat tonight. I'm all for friendly rivarly but I won't be joining in on any love affair for a 'small time' support who only reach a competition once in a blue moon!

Why is St Patrick's Day a bigger deal here than St George's Day? It really winds me up - we're ENGLISH! God save the Queen! ;) Come on you England Boys!

I was particularly amused at the comment last night by Clyde Tydsley last night when he referred to the Irish as "happy drunks".

Anyone who wishes to investigate this national phenomenon should go to Cheltenham during the festival. They will soon find out that the drunken Irish are just as vile and violent as other drunken offshore islanders. I lived in the area for 10 years..................so trust me I know.
